The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is reportedly weighing its options for the 2027 presidential race, with former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi topping the list of potential candidates.
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed dropped the hint during an interview on Politics Today (Channels TV) on Thursday, August 28, 2025.
Why Jonathan & Obi?
Mohammed described Jonathan as “the most celebrated politician today”, praising his resilience after the 2015 elections and subsequent court vindication.
On Obi, who ran under the Labour Party in 2023, Mohammed said:
“If he decides to return to PDP, free of obstacles, he will absolutely have an opportunity.”
Subtle Moves Behind the Scenes
When asked if PDP governors were already wooing Obi, Mohammed replied:
“Haven’t you seen him with me? He’s my brother, my friend, and one of the most celebrated politicians too. We’re not idle; we just don’t make noise about it.”
He also mentioned other southern PDP leaders like Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and even hinted at talks with former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi, saying:
“If Amaechi wants to return, he’s free to do so.”
PDP’s 2027 Strategy
The party’s NEC meeting in Abuja recently zoned the presidential ticket to the South, while confirming Umar Damagum as National Chairman from the North.
Mohammed stressed that the PDP is actively seeking big names and strong contenders to reclaim Aso Rock in 2027.
