The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, has surged again across the country, with some retail outlets selling for as high as ₦1,300 and ₦1,250 per kilogram in recent days.
This represents a sharp increase compared to ₦1,050 per kg recorded last week, raising concerns among households already grappling with soaring living costs.
Naija News had earlier reported that the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Bayo Ojulari, linked the instability to the recent strike by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).
Speaking with State House correspondents after meeting President Bola Tinubu on Sunday, October 5, Ojulari said the industrial action disrupted loading and distribution for several days, creating an artificial spike in prices.
Interestingly, the spike comes despite the Dangote Refinery’s efforts to ease supply pressures. The refinery recently reduced its ex-depot price of LPG by ₦50, bringing the rate down from ₦810 per kilogram last week to ₦760 per kilogram.
However, the retail market has not reflected this reduction, as consumers continue to pay significantly higher prices.
Based on the current average market price of ₦1,250 per kilogram, the cost of refilling popular cylinder sizes is as follows:
1kg – ₦1,250
3kg – ₦3,750
5kg – ₦6,250
10kg – ₦12,500
12kg – ₦15,000
12.5kg – ₦15,625
