ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Presidential candidate of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2027 general election, Peter Obi has renewed his call on the Federal Government to prioritise the rehabilitation and maintenance of existing roads rather than embarking on new road construction projects.
Obi, who took to his X handle on Monday, argued that scarce public resources should be channelled towards fixing critical highways that serve millions of Nigerians instead of initiating new projects and road dualisation schemes that offer limited immediate benefits.

Citing the Asaba–Benin Road as an example, Obi described the highway as one of Nigeria’s most strategic transport corridors, linking several states in the South-South, South-East and parts of the North Central to Lagos.
According to him, travellers from Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Rivers, Imo, Ebonyi, Cross River, Abia, Enugu, and parts of Benue and Kogi States rely heavily on the route, yet large sections of the road have deteriorated, resulting in prolonged traffic gridlock and significant hardship for commuters, transport operators and businesses.

The former Anambra State governor lamented that the poor state of the Asaba–Benin Road mirrors the condition of many major federal highways across the country, stressing that the government should focus on reconstructing and maintaining existing infrastructure before announcing new road projects.
He maintained that Nigerians need safe, functional and motorable roads rather than projects designed to attract public attention.
Obi further warned against what he described as superficial infrastructure initiatives driven by political considerations, insisting that addressing the deplorable state of critical road networks should take precedence.

He reiterated his belief that effective infrastructure maintenance remains essential to improving transportation, boosting economic activities and easing the burden on Nigerians, concluding with his familiar message that “A New Nigeria is Possible.”
