Makurdi, Benue State – In a major political shake-up, Governor Hyacinth Alia has dissolved the Benue State Executive Council, effectively relieving all commissioners of their duties.
The announcement came at the conclusion of the 12th Executive Council meeting of 2025, held in Makurdi. According to a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, the decision marks a strategic move aimed at refreshing the state’s leadership structure.
New Chief of Staff Appointed
Following the dissolution, Governor Alia immediately appointed Barr. Moses Atagher as the new Chief of Staff to the Governor. A seasoned legal practitioner and administrator, Atagher previously served two terms as the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice. He also held the position of Acting Managing Director at the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria. His appointment is with immediate effect.
Commissioners Directed to Handover
All former commissioners have been instructed to hand over responsibilities to the permanent secretaries of their respective ministries. The governor expressed appreciation to the outgoing cabinet members for their service over the past two years.
“While some may not be reappointed, Governor Alia encourages them to remain committed to the party and continue to work with the system. This transition is an opportunity for other citizens to step up and contribute to the development of the state,” the statement read.
Reactions and Appreciation
Speaking on behalf of the outgoing cabinet, Barr. Bemsen Mnyim thanked the governor for the opportunity to serve. “Every position of service is a learning experience. We’ve gained invaluable insights while working under your leadership,” he said.
Similar Moves Across the Region
Benue’s cabinet shake-up mirrors similar actions in neighboring states. Recently, Nasarawa State Governor, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, dissolved his Executive Council, including the Secretary to the State Government, who was instructed to hand over to the Permanent Secretary for Cabinet Affairs and Special Services.
Governor Condemns Recent Violence in Yelewata
In a separate development, Governor Alia has strongly condemned the recent attack on innocent residents in Yelewata by suspected criminal herders. In a statement delivered by his deputy, Barrister Sam Ode, the governor reaffirmed that “no cause or grievance justifies the taking of innocent lives.”
Governor Alia’s administration continues to pursue both political and security reforms aimed at restoring stability and fostering inclusive governance across Benue State.
