The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described Abuja as one of the safest cities in Nigeria, attributing its relative peace to deliberate government security measures and the commitment of residents to harmonious living.
Delivering his Independence Day message on Wednesday, Wike praised residents for fostering unity despite occasional challenges.
“Residents have remained intentional about living together in peace and harmony, in spite of a few distractions. Consequently, the FCT has become one of the most peaceful places to reside in the entire country,” Wike stated.
He emphasized that Abuja’s calm atmosphere is not a coincidence but the outcome of sustained collaboration between authorities and the people.
“This is not only due to the security measures we have put in place, but also because of residents’ zero tolerance for insecurity and their readiness to promote peace in every part of the Territory,” he added.
The Minister, however, urged residents not to become complacent, assuring that his administration, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, remains committed to maintaining law and order.
“I, therefore, appeal to all residents to go about their lawful businesses, be watchful over their neighbourhoods, and report all suspicious movements to law enforcement agents,” he said.
Looking ahead, Wike reminded residents that the FCT would once again set the tone for Nigeria’s election season when Area Council elections take place in February 2026.
He called for peaceful campaigns and urged citizens to elect leaders who genuinely care about the people.
“Come February 2026, the FCT will kick off the electioneering process as residents head to the polls to elect new chairmen and councillors for the six area councils. I encourage everyone to vote peacefully and choose leaders with vision, capacity, and the interest of the people at heart,” he said.
Wike’s remarks came against the backdrop of recent security concerns, including the tragic death of 29-year-old Arise Television news anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, who reportedly jumped from a third-floor apartment to escape armed robbers.
Describing the incident as “tragic and unacceptable,” the Minister pledged full support for ongoing police investigations, stressing that every effort will be made to ensure justice.
