The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has intensified its onslaught against criminal elements in Benue State with a precision air operation targeting suspected kidnappers in the troubled Ogbadigbo axis.
The operation, which took place near the Enugu-Benue boundary, saw NAF combat aircraft provide critical close air support to ground troops advancing on the kidnappers’ enclave, the Air Force disclosed on Wednesday night.
According to a statement by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the air strikes successfully disrupted the activities of the armed gang and paved the way for surface forces to dominate the area.
Ejodame confirmed that the mission was a success, but revealed a minor incident on the return leg. The helicopter involved made a precautionary landing about 10 nautical miles from the airfield while returning to base.
He explained that the precautionary landing is a standard safety procedure in line with established operational protocols after intensive combat missions.
“The helicopter has returned to base,” the NAF spokesman assured, adding that there was no cause for alarm.
The Nigerian Air Force reiterated its commitment to sustain air interdiction and provide continuous air cover for joint security operations aimed at flushing out bandits, kidnappers and other criminal groups threatening communities in Benue and neighbouring states.
This latest operation comes amid renewed efforts by the military to restore peace and improve security along the Enugu-Benue corridor, which has witnessed a surge in abduction cases in recent months.
