IBADAN- The National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) has debunked a story trending on the social media of a corps member posted to Amotekun Corps for one-year mandatory youths service programme.
Assistant Director, Press and Public Relations, NYSC Oyo State, Ms Christy Olatoye, in a statement on Saturday in Ibadan said Amotekun was not included on the list of employers on NYSC database.
She, however, said the Western Nigeria Security Network code-named “Amotekun” remained a respected organisation
Olatoye reiterated that a posting letter with such deployment did not emanate from the NYSC Oyo state.
“The attention of the NYSC Oyo state has been drawn to a story trending on the Social media of a corps member posted to Amotekun Corps.
“I want to set the record straight that it is the policy of the National Youth Service Corps to post Corps members to where they would be relevant and their services will be well utilised.
“While I admit that the Amotekun Corps is a respected organisation in its line of assignment but it is not included on the list of employers on our database. We only post to employers on our database.
She advised pranksters not to portraying the scheme negatively.
“The National Youth Service Corps is a noble scheme that has served the nation for over five decades with notable achievements to our records.
“It is therefore not an organisation that should be used as an object of prank, “she said. (NAN)

The Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund, Akintunde Sawyerr, has explained that the potential beneficiaries of the Federal Government’s student loan scheme would have to repay the loan two years after concluding the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.
Sawyerr, who was a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, said it is important for the loan to be paid back in time because other young people are on the queue to benefit from the scheme.
He acknowledged the challenge of unemployment in the country which could be a challenge to repaying the loan but said that the government is trying to address that through some other initiatives.
“There is 35 per cent youth unemployment in the country at the moment, there are other initiatives of the government that are seeking to address this. The truth about this is that we are giving loans to successful applicants; you need those loans to be paid back, why? One of the primary reasons we need those loans to be paid back is that there are people in the queue, there are other people wanting to get into the scheme and get loans. The term of repayment is two years after youth service, if and I reiterate if they have a job.
“This doesn’t meant that people can’t pay back early, there are some who get very lucky and they end with oil companies and banks and they are able to do that or they have an uncle somewhere who says I am going to liquidate your loan for you,” Sawyerr said.
The education loan fund secretary said people need the loan because they need better education to get good jobs that would enable them repay the loan at the end of their youth service.
Sawyerr said there won’t be need for any collateral, adding that the loan would vary according to course of study.
He some of the challenges with the loan would be addressed as the scheme progresses, adding that all is set for President Bola Tinubu to launch the scheme.
Meanwhile, the President in Niger State on Monday, said the much-awaited Student Loan Scheme and other programmes of his administration which ought to have commenced are being fined-tuned.
“The Student Loan Programme will commence. There will be employment benefits for our graduates. The social security programme for the elderly and vulnerable will commence. We are fine-tuning all of that.”
The President had last June signed the Access to Higher Education Bill into law to allow indigent students access interest-free loans to run programmes in any Nigerian tertiary institutions.
The loan is open to all Nigerian students in the nation’s higher institutions.

JALINGO – The Taraba State Coordinator of National Youth Service Corps NYSC Mr Anthony Nzoka on Monday said that the Corps is seeking partnership with multiple groups to provide funding for Corps members to enable them startup businesses.
Nzoka disclosed this in Jalingo during the graduation of Corps members from the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development program.
He urged the Corps members to take the skills that they have acquired seriously as they may be their ticket to a better life and secured future.
” This aspect of the scheme has been an integral objective of the scheme from the onset but it only sometime in 2012. This training started on the 21st of February, and today, we are celebrating your successful completion.
“Today’s world is evolving and we must evolve to conform with contemporary realities. The population explosion means that there is added pressures on the available jobs. It is therefore imperative that we acquire practical skills that will aid in earning an honest living. You are introduced to the skills. Don’t assume that you are experts already. You have a long way to go. Continue the training after the orientation course.
“We are partnering with agencies for funding options which may be open to you for participation in the course of your service year. Every nation is as rich as the skills of her citizens. We are struggling as a nation because we do not have enough skills. As we grow in skills, we would surmount our challenges.
“I therefore urge you to strive to create employment for the upcoming generation through your skills. Focus on your skills and think of how best to deploy it for maximum impact” he said.
Dr Hannatu Joshua who is a graduate of Human Anatomy trained in making 3D floors. She said that the training is not only inspiring but also fun.

Another Corps member Galadima Idris said that “in the course of this one week, I have learnt a lot more than I did in 8 years in the University. My course will now compliment me in this new found skill.
Similarly, Mr Ogunlade Oladapo Daniel
notes that “if the university system can take an example from SAED and the NYSC to make sure that students have as much practical knowledge in the course of study, our education system will be better for it”.

Taraba State Governor Dr Agbu Kefas has promised to prioritize the security and welfare of Corps Members posted to serve in the state to make their service year experience memorable and comfortable.
The governor gave the assurance during the inauguration of the Batch C Stream 2 orientation program for Corps Members posted to the state at the Orientation camp in Sibre.
Governor Kefas who was represented by the state commissioner for youth and Sports development Joshua Joseph said that his administration is taking education very serious and the role of Corps Members in making the free education program a success can never be overemphasized.
“Let me first of all congratulate all of you for going through school and getting mobilized for this orientation program. It is indeed the dream of any serious young person to wear this regalia you are putting on now to and to go through this once in a lifetime experience. The idea is for you to explore new horizons, meet new people, go to new places and above all, serve your fatherland while preparing yourself for the life after school.
“Here in Taraba, my administration has declared free and compulsory primary and secondary school education. This is because we take the education of our children very seriously and must do whatever it takes to get them off the streets and into the classrooms.
“It is not enough to mobilize the children back to school if necessary measures are not put in place to ensure that they get quality education. That is why the state government is going the extra mile to ensure that we improve the physical infrastructure in our schools and as well boost the manpower to confirm with the influx of new population.
“It is therefore our understanding that Corps Members have a vital role to play towards the actualization of this goal. Consequently, we have put in place measure to ensure that your welfare is greatly augmented by the state government. We would equally prioritize your security at all times. Security is a major challenge but we are working relentlessly to ensure the safety of lives and property of the citizens, wherever they may be.
“I therefore welcome you all to Taraba State, Nature’s gift to the nation. I urge you to take this orientation program seriously and conduct yourselves with decorum, respecting our cultural and social diversification and orientation” Kefas said.
Taraba State Coordinator of the Scheme Mr Anthony Nzoka in his remarks commended the state government for the continued support towards the success of the Scheme in the state and assured that the state will enjoy unalloyed support of the Scheme at all times.
Nzoka urged the Corps Members to take the orientation program seriously especially the SAED program where they are expected to learn practical skills that will help them even beyond the service year.
“Your service year comes and goes in a flash. Before you know what is happening, you are already preparing for passing out. It is therefore very important for you to be very deliberate with everything from the onset. Whatever you wish to achieve, start it now.
“In the days ahead, you will merged in various groups to learn various skills. Please, do not take this for granted. It is a very important component of this service year and can make all the difference. The knowledge you will acquire here could become a life changer for you. White collar jobs are becoming increasingly scarce and you must begin to think out of the box. This starts with paying close attention to everything that goes on here in the course of these Three weeks” Nzoka said.
Fear! Akwa Ibom students lament frequent abduction of prospective corps members
written by Arabella Zikora
Students of the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, raised the alarm over yet another abduction of prospective corps members from the state.
The abductions, which almost came in succession, had posed a serious concern to residents.
According to reports, within a space of three months (August-November) nineteen intending corps members were kidnapped on their way to Zamfara and Kogi States through the Akwa Ibom State-owned transport company, AKTC.
First was on August 19, 2023, when eight corps members on a highway in Zamfara State, enroute the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Sokoto were abducted.
One month later, one person according to the management of the NYSC was rescued through the help of security agencies, while the rest are still in captivity till this moment.
Though the NYSC has assured that the remaining victims would be rescued, the realization of the
promise remains in doubt as three months after, no progress report had been made.
Parents of the victims have lamented government’s abandonment and negligence, saying that they have sold their properties to raise N13 million which they offered to the kidnappers to release their children but they (kidnappers) collected that ransom and held back their captives, demanding additional N100 million.
Then came the abduction of another set of 11 corps members who boarded the AKTC to NYSC Orientation camp in Kogi State early November, 2023.
It is not clear whether the 11 of them have been rescued, but our correspondent gathered that most of the captives have been released through the personal efforts of their different families who parted with millions of Naira.
Speaking with one of the parents of the abducted corps members who did not want his name in print, he said, “Nigeria is a lost country. Just pray that nothing of this nature happens to you because our government does not care about us.
“My daughter was one of the 11 corps members that were kidnapped in Kogi State. It was a traumatic experience because I was with my wife when I was contacted, and immediately my wife heard the news, she fainted. I was just praying that nothing should happen to her.”
Asked whether he contacted the police, he said, “of course we contacted the security agencies, they tried their best, but I needed to get my daughter out from the den as quickly as possible.
“I thank God that some other parents rallied round, some paid N2.8m, while others paid N2 million ransom to those guys before they released our children. It was a terrible experience.”
Reacting to the issue, the National Association of Akwa Ibom State Students, University of Uyo, urged the Federal Government, the Akwa Ibom State government, the security agencies, the National Assembly, as well as the Directors of NYSC to rise to the occasion and tackle the ongoing challenge.
The students in a statement signed by the leadership of the association further urged the relevant authorities to put up all strategic mechanisms within their powers to rescue their colleagues from the abductors and return them home safely.
They also called for a lasting solution to the kidnapping of corps members by intensifying security on routes leading from one state to the other and posting students within their regions of study.
The statement reads, “Our attention has been drawn to the abduction of yet another set of Akwa Ibom State Students on their way to orientation camp in Kogi.
“The constant attacks on our students have thrown the University community into serious tension and apprehension, especially students awaiting posting.
“We consider this situation to be highly inhuman and unfair to us as Nigerian students . Our life and safety is paramount and should be the concern of the federal government, security agencies, State government and all other authorities.
“We are calling on the FG, IGP, Minister of Education, Senate president, Governor of Akwa Ibom State, NYSC, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly to rise up to this challenge affecting our youth corpers and by extension the university community.”
However, some fresh graduates awaiting their NYSC mobilization in an interview expressed apprehension over the incident, praying that they would not be posted to the North.
One Cynthia Chidera said that corps members have become “endangered species” in the North, noting that it was absolutely risky to travel by land to the North as a corps member.
She urged the federal government to look into the matter urgently before the next posting, observing that the last two postings witnessed the abduction of 19 prospective corps members and wondered what would happen in the next batch.
Alleged discharge certificate forgery: Enugu Gov, Mbah floors NYSC in court
written by Arabella Zikora
A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday dismissed the allegations of forgery of a discharge certificate brought against the Enugu State Governor, Barrister Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Justice Inyang Eden Ekwo threw away the allegations following the inability of the Corps to prove and defend the allegations as required by law.
The judge, in a judgment in a suit by the governor against the NYSC, imposed a fine of N5 million on the Corps to be paid jointly to the plaintiff for suppressing facts and conspiring against him in the heinous allegations.
The court held that with the unchallenged evidence of the plaintiff on how the discharge certificate was issued to him in 2003 by NYSC after serving in a law firm in Lagos and the inability of the Corps to come up with counter-evidence, it was crystal clear that the plaintiff served the mandatory one-year service.
Among others, Justice Ekwo held that while the onus to prove forgery allegations lies heavily on the NYSC, it failed, leaving Mbah’s evidence heavier and more believable.
Mbah had sued the NYSC and its Director, Corps Certification, Ibrahim Muhammad, for publishing a disclaimer, denying the issuance of a discharge certificate issued to him on January 6, 2003.
The NYSC had, on February. 1, written a letter signed by Ibrahim Muhammed saying that the Corps did not issue the NYSC certificate in Mbah’s possession.
Details later.
ABUJA- A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Monday, awarded N5 million damages against the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for alleging that the corps’ discharged certificate held by Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State was fake.
Justice Inyang Ekwo, in a judgment, held that the Director General of the NYSC and the corps, who were defendants in the suit, were guilty of misrepresentation of material facts.
The judge held that the certificate presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by Mbah was authentic and validly issued by the NYSC.
Justice Ekwo further held that evidence before the court showed that the governor though was mobilised for service in 2001, he, however, completed his service in 2003.
According to the court, Mbah, midway into his service, sought and after received permission from NYSC to attend the Nigeria Law School, was reinstated into the NYSC in 2003.
Besides, the judge said that while the evidence that Mbah served in the law firm of one Udeh was not challenged by the NYSC, he berated the corps for not charging the governor for forgery if they actually believed that they didn’t issue the said NYSC certificate to him.
He concluded that the NYSC was mischievous and acted in bad faith by denying Mbah’s NYSC certificate.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mbah had sued the NYSC and its Director, Corps Certification, Mr Ibrahim Muhammad, for publishing a disclaimer, denying the issuance of a discharge certificate issued to him on Jan.6, 2003.
Justice Ekwo, on May 15, restrained the NYSC, Muhammad and any of their agents from, henceforth, engaging in such publication pending the hearing and determination of the substantive matter.
The order followed an ex parte motion moved by Mbah’s counsel, Mr Emeka Ozoani, SAN.
But the NYCS, in its preliminary objection dated May 19 and filed May 22, sought an order dismissing or striking out the suit for want of jurisdiction and competence.
Giving three grounds of argument, the corps said that Mbah did not appeal to the president as required by the provisions of Section 20 of the National Youth Service Corps Act, Cap N84, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 before instituting the suit against the defendants.
It argued that appeal to the president was a condition-precedent to instituting an action against the defendants in any court of law in Nigeria.
According to the NYSC, consequent upon the refusal of the plaintiff/respondent to comply with the provisions of Section 20 of the National Youth Service Corps Act, this suit is premature for the jurisdiction of the court to crystalise.
The NYSC had, on Feb. 1, written a letter signed by Mr Ibrahim Muhammed saying that the NYSC certificate belonging to Mbah was not issued by the corps.
Mbah of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was declared the winner of the Enugu state governorship election held in March 18 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).(NAN)
ABUJA- The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has reacted to a viral video of a female corps member who was asked to kneel in school.
The body said it is investigating the viral video which captured the corps member undergoing an embarassing punishment at her place of primary assignment.
The video showed the young being punished for an offence which was not clearly explained. She was allegedly forced to kneel down by a school proprietress.
According to the dialogue heard in the short footage, it seemed that the corps member was being punished for her failure to work.
From the NYSC member’s claims in her native Yoruba dialect, she said she had alluded to menstruation symptoms.
The proprietress argued that if she had explained, she would have understood because she is also a woman.
The video however infuriated Nigerians who alleged a habit among employers of bullying corp members at their place of primary assignment (PPA).
Katsina State Governor, Umaru Dikko Radda, has promised to employ medical doctors undergoing the mandatory one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Katsina State if they are willing to remain in the state after completion of their service.
The governor also expressed his intention to employ corps members who excelled in special courses of study as classroom teachers.
The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, who disclosed this in a statement, said he made the pledge on Tuesday when he paid a courtesy visit to the NYSC State Director, Hajiya Aisha Mohammed, at the NYSC State Secretariat.
Gov Radda, while acknowledging the strong collaboration between NYSC and Katsina State, pledged to further strengthen the partnership by increasing support for the state office of the NYSC.
Recognising the imminent passing out of the corps members at the camp, Radda announced a donation of 50 bags of rice and a bull to support the upcoming ceremony.
Speaking earlier, NYSC State Coordinator Hajiya Aisha Mohammed expressed her support and readiness to collaborate with the Radda-led administration towards achieving common goals. She also seized the opportunity to invite Governor Radda to attend the passing out ceremony of the NYSC on August 4 this year.
Benin, – The Edo State Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mrs Foluke Oladeinde, on Monday said the scheme has fostered national unity and created balance across multi-ethnic groups in the country.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the scheme which came into existence in 1973, allows university graduates a one-year compulsory service to their fatherland upon graduation.
Speaking during a five-kilometre walk to commemorate the NYSC @50 in Benin, Oladeinde said the scheme had provided manpower for both the public and private sectors, thereby contributing to the nation’s economy.
“We are celebrating NYSC @50 today and showcasing the remarkable achievements the scheme has made since inception.
“The scheme has promoted national cohesion and impacted the corps members positively through its primary assignments and community development services.
“The journey so far has been good; this is our five decades of fostering national unity and cohesion.
“The scheme has really achieved its aims and objectives. It has brought about discipline among the youths and exposed them to other cultures and traditions as most of the corps members serving in Edo are from the North, South West, and South East.
“We have seen situations where corps members inter-marry because they have learnt to appreciate each other’s way of life,” Oladeinde said.
According to her, NYSC has become a household name in Nigeria and has over time become a critical stakeholder in the nation’s electoral system.
The coordinator advised corps members to remain focused and be security conscious.
Miss Suliat Afolabi, a corps member serving in Edo, said the scheme has helped her to explore other states.
“All my life, I have been in my state in the south west. NYSC brought me to Edo and it has helped me to understand life better.
“Education is not a scam; it has brought me here to learn other people’s cultures and traditions. I have made a lot of friends since I came to Edo,” she said.
The corps members, led by their state coordinator, embarked on a five-kilometre walk in Benin to commemorate the 50th anniversary day celebration. (NAN)

Yenagoa – The State Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Bayelsa, Mrs Obiageli Okpalifo, has described the scheme as the soul of the country.
Okpalifo said this in Yenagoa, while presentating the NYSC Act and Bye Law Lecture to the 2023 Batch A, Stream 1 corps members deployed in the state.
She said that the NYSC Act was enshrined in the Nigeria constitution.
She, therefore, urged the corps members to read the documents to understand the provisions and punishment attached to each section of the contents.
She admonished them to realise that, like any other laws, ignorance of the bye law is not an excuse.
She further urged them to read and internalise all NYSC literatures given to them on camp, in order to be abreast of the scheme’s activities, rules and regulations.
The NYSC coordinator cited relevant areas in the two documents as they concern corps members during mobilisation, orientation course, primary assignment, secondary assignment and the winding up/passing out programme.
She warned that those who flouted the laid down rules would be punished accordingly, while outstanding corps members would be rewarded at the end of the service year.
Okpalifo underscored the need for corps members to avoid any acts that could tarnish their records during the national assignment, adding that this could affect them in future. (NAN)

Katsina, – The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Borno has awarded letters of commendation to seven camp officials for outstanding performances during the Batch “C” Stream 1 orientation course.
The NYSC Coordinator in the state, Mr Nura Umar stated this during the closing of the three-week orientation exercise, on Tuesday in Katsina.

He said the scheme honoured the personnel for excellent performances, and motivate others to put in their best to fast track implementation of the orientation exercise.

According to him, the scheme is a platform through which corps members contribute their quarter to achieve that, adding the purpose of the scheme is to promote national unity, understanding and peaceful coexistence.
The Coordinator urged the corps members to respect the culture and religion of their host communities as well as collaborate with them to enhance Community Development Service (CDS).
He tasked them to be law abiding and good ambassadors of the scheme and their families.
He stressed the need for the corp members to use social media for positive purposes instead of promoting rumours, fake news, hatred and ethnic sentiments.
The Coordinator further urged corps employers to support them to enable them to realise their potentials, improve their welfare, and called on the corpers to utilise the skill acquired to engage in productive activities. (NAN)

Gunmen on Wednesday invaded the National Youth Service Scheme Corpers’ lodge located along Udo Ekong Ekwere street, off Information Drive in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State and raped women occupants.
It was gathered that the gunmen who stormed the area by 1 am that on tricycles carted away valuables including laptops, cell phones and cash.
Some of the corps members who spoke with newsmen the following morning lamented that there was no help anywhere during the attack despite the cry for help.
One of the corp members who identified himself as Emeka Emmanuel said, “They arrived on a tricycle, popularly called Keke and immediately started operation. They beamed high-intensity torchlight everywhere and pounced on every door with heavy iron and threatened to shoot us if we fail to cooperate”.
A female Corps member, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, while fighting back tears, said her phones, laptop, cash were forcefully taken away from her after the hoodlums gained entrance into her room from the back door.
“You know at that period of the night, most of us females, we used to sleep naked and the suddenness of the attack caught us unprepared. They beamed the torch through the window and threatened to shoot if the door is not quickly opened,” she explained.
“I have never heard of this anywhere in Nigeria, even in the North, where insecurity is at the highest peak, that Corpers could be deliberately targetted, raped, and robbed by criminals at gunpoint. Is it because we are not from Akwa Ibom that no one could hear our shouts and come to save us?”, another female colleague, lamented.
Mr. Nsikak Ibanga, a night guard at the State Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists which is located opposite the corpers lodge said, “I raised alarm by hitting the supporting pillars holding the reconstructed NUJ auditorium,” adding that “the sound reverberated across the whole area but no response”.
Another neighbour, Bassey Offiong, said, “When I heard the attack and the outcry of the Corpers, I quickly reached out to the Police at Ikot Akpanabia Command, which is very close here, but they arrived a little late after the criminals had finished and left with their tricycle”.
Also, the Youth Leader of the area, Comrade Godwin Okpo, blamed incessant criminal activities around communities on the collapse of internal security organized by the local residents.
“I used to go round from house to house to collect monetary contributions for the vigilante group to secure the area at night, but suddenly they started accusing me of embezzling their money, so there was nothing I could do again.
He added, “When I heard the incident late in the night around 1:00 am this morning, I moved to the place but since I was alone, there was nothing I could do”, he said.
He blamed the inability of the youth to come out on noise of generators running into late night in most homes.
“I have told them that once it’s midnight, they should put off their generators so we can hear what’s happening in the neighborhoods,” he stressed.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macdon, said he was yet to be fully briefed on the incident, adding that he would investigate and get back to our correspondent
He said, “I don’t have any information about the incident but I will find out and get across to you”.
