The Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria (DSFN) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government to urgently implement existing disability laws across the country, ensuring inclusion, quality healthcare, and dignity for persons with intellectual disabilities.
The appeal was made in a statement released on Saturday as the foundation marked the 24th edition of its annual October awareness event, themed “Health Care for All”. The programme featured an advocacy and charity walk in Lagos, ending at the Ikeja Local Government Secretariat, with support from the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority and The 7 Fifteen Philanthropic Foundation.
According to the DSFN, many Nigerians with intellectual disabilities remain underserved, neglected, and excluded from essential healthcare services, leading to preventable health challenges and shortened lifespans.
“When we talk about disability, there are disabilities, and there are disabilities. Some individuals can speak for their rights, while others cannot. It is for them that we raise our voices,” the foundation stressed.
The foundation highlighted its ongoing work in inclusive education, vocational training, and healthcare, citing its Lagos centre where participants are trained in barbing, hairdressing, baking, leatherwork, and arts under the certification of the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board. A new fish farming project is also planned to promote independence and self-reliance among participants.
Despite these efforts, the DSFN expressed concern that only 19 out of 36 Nigerian states have adopted the Disability Act, leaving millions without legal protection.
“We ask why our federal government cannot enforce disability laws to guarantee integration, dignity, and equal opportunities. Implementing these laws will mark a true step toward building an inclusive Nigeria,” the statement added.
The charity walk attracted several advocacy groups, including Pacelli, Punuka Foundation, OCD Foundation, Lion Ability Foundation, Modupe Cole, Victoria Foundation, and the Association of the Physically Challenged.
The DSFN urged Tinubu’s administration to prioritise disability-inclusive governance, adding that enforcing the law would not only strengthen equality but also reflect Nigeria’s commitment to protecting its most vulnerable citizens.
