10th House Has Been Proactive and Impactful, Says Speaker Abbas at Legislative Agenda Dialogue

ABUJA (PRECISE POST)  –   The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D., GCON, has declared that the 10th House has demonstrated unprecedented productivity and responsiveness since its inauguration in June 2023, with landmark legislative achievements that address Nigeria’s most pressing challenges.

Speaking in Abuja on Monday at the inaugural Policy Dialogue on the Legislative Agenda of the House, Speaker Abbas stated that the current House has introduced a record number of bills and motions, many of which have already received presidential assent, marking significant progress in reforming the nation’s laws and governance structures.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Speaker, House of Representatives, Musa Abdullahi Krishi made available to Precise Post in Abuja.

Precise Post recalls that the event which was organised by the Office of the Speaker in partnership with the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), the National Assembly Library Trust Fund (NALTF), and UK International Development, brought together key players from federal and state governments, the private sector, civil society, and the diplomatic community.

Abbas said the dialogue underscores the House’s commitment to accountability, transparency, and a citizen-focused approach to lawmaking. “This is part of our promise to regularly engage Nigerians, report on our performance, and adjust our course based on feedback,” he said.

As the House reaches its midterm mark, Abbas emphasized the importance of reflecting on its journey. “When we began, Nigeria was facing economic instability, security crises, and public disillusionment. We understood that extraordinary times demanded an extraordinary legislative response,” he said.

He highlighted that the 10th House adopted the most ambitious Legislative Agenda in its history—crafted through consultations with ministries, agencies, civil society groups, and development partners. The agenda aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, promoting synergy between the legislature and the executive.

The agenda is built around eight broad priorities, including good governance, national security, economic revitalization, legal reforms, social development, climate action, foreign policy, and inclusive representation. Abbas praised the House’s methodical execution strategy, involving integration into committee work plans, setting milestones, and tracking performance.

He noted that flexibility was also built into the agenda, allowing the House to adapt to emerging issues while staying committed to its long-term goals. “We didn’t just announce an ambitious agenda; we backed it with clear mechanisms and the political will to implement it,” he stated.

On representation, the Speaker reaffirmed that the 10th House remains deeply engaged with the Nigerian people. “We have made citizen participation a core principle—not just in rhetoric, but in action,” he concluded.

The dialogue serves as a precursor to the upcoming Open NASS Week, where the legislature will open its doors to public scrutiny and present its midterm report to the nation.
