Normalising Banditry And Other Aberrations

By Olatunji Dare The downing last week of a Nigeria Air Force (NAF) Alpha jet on a combat mission in the ungoverned and increasingly ungovernable space in the Zamfara/Kaduna area of northern Nigeria by disparate armed groups battling the Nigerian state and traditional institutions has introduced a new, frightening element into the conflict that has overwhelmed that zone and is threatening to spill over. Many military planes have crashed there in the recent past, but this is the first to be attributed to what the NAF’s director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, in a statement giving details of the incident, called ‘enemy fire.’ Not for him the fashionable dignification of those who downed the combat plane and their allies as ‘bandits.’ They are waging a war of attrition and the armed forces will by their orientation regard them as enemies and engage them as such. Nigerians are increasingly unsafe in their homes, at work, at leisure, in the streets, and at worship. And this situation is largely accepted as normal. The New Normal. Now, pilots are …

Andy Uba’s Governorship Quest: Desire or Destiny?

By Victor Afam Ogene John Lennon, the famous British singer, of the Beatles fame must have forseen the future when he many years ago penned down the immutable lines: “There’s nowhere you can be, that isn’t where you’re meant to be.” These lines succinctly speak true of the contemporary times, especially at it relates to the November 6, 2021 Anambra state governorship election. As the day draws near, one person for whom the above prophecy profoundly speaks about is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress(APC), Senator Emmanuel Andy Uba. In deed, as my dear state, once again, returns to the national and international spotlight, many observers may be wont to describe the coming election as the ‘battle of titans’, on account of the diverse criteria already set out to adjudge the candidates and their political parties. The interest in the coming election is understandably widespread, not only because Anambra state, geographically, is the gateway into Igboland, but also given the realisation that politically and otherwise, the state has somewhat become the barometer with which the rest of the country …

Kanu drags Nigeria, Kenya to African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has dragged the Nigerian and Kenyan governments to the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights, to demand accountability for his extraordinary rendition. Kanu’s special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, revealed this in a statement on his Facebook wall late Monday. Ejimakor said jurisdiction lies with the Commission because Nigeria and Kenya are state parties to the African Charter. It reads: “A few days ago, I commenced a continental legal action against Nigeria and Kenya before the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights, demanding accountability for the extraordinary rendition of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. “Jurisdiction lies with the Commission because Nigeria and Kenya are State Parties to the African Charter; and Nigeria even took a step further to domesticate the Charter, thus making it part of her municipal laws. “Both countries also have extradition laws that prohibit this sort of reprehensible conduct that saw Kanu to Nigeria. “More particularly, extraordinary rendition is expressly prohibited under the African Charter, where It provides in pertinent part that “A State may not transfer (e.g. deport, …

Ibrahim Salami, one of the Cotonou, Benin Republic-based lawyers of Sunday Igboho, disclosed the new charges after Monday’s hearing, where Igboho was ordered to remain in police custody in Benin Republic. Before the hearing, Salami had said that the legal team was expecting extradition charges from the Nigerian government against the activist. The law professor said Igboho was further remanded to allow police to conduct a thorough investigation into the charges, which included illegal migration, dubious connivance with immigration officers and an attempt to cause civil unrest.
