Rainstorm displaces over 1,000 residents in Kogi community

A heavy rainstorm has sacked over 1000 people in the Iyara community, headquarters of the Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State. According to reports, over one hundred houses were taken off by the night storm which occurred on Monday night. Speaking shortly after the disaster, the Eleta Oluyara of Iyara, Oba Jacob Meduten called on the government, well-to-do individuals and corporate bodies to assist the victims to ameliorate their sufferings. EFCC commences investigation of eight oil thieves in Akwa Ibom

The Uyo Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, says it is investigating eight suspected oil thieves in its custody. A statement released on Tuesday by EFCC head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, said the suspects were dealing in petroleum products without appropriate licences. It would be recalled that the suspects, arrested on Friday February 23, 2024, onboard a wooden boat, MV Jasmine, by the Nigeria Navy Ship, Forward Operating Base Ibaka, in Akwa Ibom, were handed over to the Commission on Tuesday, April 3, 2024 by the Commanding Officer Captain (NN) Uche Aneke. According to the EFCC spokesperson, the arrested suspects include Pere Ebiye (Captain), Okon David (DeckMan), Enuwa Wilson (Cook), Wesley Okon (DeckMan), Ade Ojo Idowu (Asst. Sallah: 222 inmates freed in Katsina

The Katsina State Government has freed 222 inmates who could not pay fines imposed on them by different courts of law ahead of the Sallah celebration. The State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, said the aim is to alleviate the burden of inmates across the state’s correctional facilities during the holy month of Ramadan and the forthcoming Sallah festivities. The state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Fadila Muhammad Dikko, disclosed this in a statement. The 222 beneficiaries, she said, were selected after a thorough verification, following recommendations to the state government for intervention. “The Governor’s benevolent act is expected to reduce congestion in these facilities and enable the freed inmates to partake in the joyous occasion of Sallah with their loved ones,” Fadila said. While appreciating Governor Radda for the initiative, the Katsina Attorney-General disclosed that the beneficiaries were selected from among inmates incarcerated for minor commercial and non-capital offenses.

NSCDC deploys 2,050 officers for Sallah in Katsina

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, says it deployed 2,050 of its personnel to provide security for residents and protect critical national assets and infrastructure during and after the Eid-El-Fitr Sallah celebration in Katsina State. This, the Command said, is in addition to the undercover operatives deployed to gather intelligence and prevent any disruptions during the Sallah. According to a statement issued by DSC Buhari Hamisu, NSCDC’s Public Relations Officer, Katsina, the security personnel will be stationed at prayer grounds, event centres, transportation hubs, markets, and government facilities within Katsina and Daura Emirates. The State Commandant, Jamilu A. Indabawa, disclosed this at a meeting with senior personnel of the NSCDC. He stressed the need for vigilance and diligence during the Sallah festival.
