The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has alleged that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, and other top politicians left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after their attempts to hijack the party’s leadership failed.
Speaking during a media chat on Thursday, Wike claimed that David Mark had ambitions to become the PDP National Chairman but was denied the position—prompting his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which now serves as the coalition platform for opposition forces.
Wike questioned the motives behind the newly formed coalition, asserting that its key members are driven by a desire to reclaim power, rather than genuine national interest.
“Nigerians must be cautious of this group of politicians who are bitter simply because they are no longer in positions of authority,” Wike stated. “The public knows who they are. For how long will they continue to deceive Nigerians? Who is really prepared to listen to them?”
He further argued that the opposition bloc has weakened itself ahead of the 2027 general elections, stating, “The opposition has decimated itself.”
It will be recalled that Atiku Abubakar, David Mark, and other prominent figures recently aligned with the African Democratic Congress as part of a broader coalition aimed at challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reelection bid in 2027.
