Israeli cruise ship greeted by Gaza protests in Rhodes

ATHENS – No fewer than 50 people gathered outside the port of the Greek Island of Rhodes to protest the arrival of an Israeli cruise ship carrying 650 passengers, local media reported on Tuesday.

Police detained 15 demonstrators, launching proceedings against eight individuals over accusations of racism and violence against police officers, according to broadcaster ERTnews reported.

The cruise ship passengers were then able to disembark undisturbed, according to the report. It came after the same ship was prevented from docking at the island of Syros due to protests.

But police in Rhodes appeared to have drawn lessons from the earlier incident.

Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis told ERTnews that while people were allowed to demonstrate they must not blockade the ship nor engage in violence.

Greece and its many islands is a popular holiday destination for Israeli tourists.

However, they face increasing demonstrations and criticism over the actions of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government in Gaza.

The Chairman of the Greek tourism union, Grigoris Chotzoglou, warned of increasing chaos in the country’s tourism sector.

He attributed the protests to left-wing groups as well as small minorities and their offshoots, accusing the demonstrators of trying to garner attention through isolated actions. (dpa/NAN)
