U.S. President Donald Trump has intensified his hardline immigration policy, pushing for the deportation of millions of undocumented immigrants and expanding removals to third countries.
Confirming the development, Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, disclosed at a press conference that a group of 14 deportees — including Nigerians and one Gambian — had already arrived in Ghana. He explained that the Ghanaian government facilitated their return to their respective home countries.
According to Mahama, the Nigerians were transported back by bus, while authorities were assisting the Gambian national with his return process. The Ghanaian leader stressed that such arrangements were part of regional cooperation agreements, which make the transfer of deportees easier within West Africa.
This move comes amid criticism from human rights groups, who argue that the U.S. deportation strategy violates fundamental rights, particularly when migrants are sent to third countries where many have never lived.
Three Police Officers Shot Dead at Kogi Checkpoint
In a separate development, tragedy struck in Kogi State as three police officers were shot dead at a checkpoint in Egbe community, Yagba West Local Government Area.
The Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP William Aya, confirmed the incident to journalists in Lokoja on Wednesday.
He explained that the attack occurred in the early hours of the day at the boundary between Kogi and Kwara States. Aya assured that investigations had commenced, while security operations have been intensified to track down the perpetrators.
