Nigeria have taken an early lead against Benin in their decisive CAF 2026 World Cup qualifying match at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, thanks to a quick strike from Victor Osimhen.
The Napoli forward found the net in the third minute, calmly finishing into the bottom-right corner after latching on to a precise through ball from Samuel Chukwueze. The goal gave the Super Eagles the perfect start in a match they must win to stay in contention for next year’s FIFA World Cup.
Nigeria began brightly, pressing high and controlling possession in the opening exchanges. Osimhen had already tested the Beninese defence moments earlier, chasing a long pass before the goalkeeper intervened.
The stakes remain high in Group C, with Nigeria needing at least a two-goal victory to boost their qualification hopes, depending on the result of the concurrent match between South Africa and Rwanda.
Benin, currently leading the group, would seal automatic qualification with a win in Uyo.
The game continues with Nigeria leading 1–0 after 10 minutes of play.
