ABUJA (PRECISE POST)  –  Former federal lawmaker that represented Kaduna Central senatorial District and human rights activist, Senator Shehu Sani has described the United States’ withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO) as “unfortunate,” warning that the decision could weaken the global fight against health emergencies, especially in vulnerable and remote communities.

In a statement reacting to the development, Sani said the WHO has, for decades, served as a critical global institution for addressing health challenges across continents, playing an indispensable role in disease control, emergency response and public health coordination.

According to him, the organization’s reach extends to some of the most remote and underserved parts of the world, making it irreplaceable in the global health architecture.

“For decades, WHO has been a global institution and instrument for tackling health challenges in all corners of the globe and in the most remote communities,” Sani said, stressing that no other body currently matches its scope or capacity.

He cautioned that the U.S. withdrawal could create a significant funding gap that may undermine ongoing and future health interventions, particularly in developing countries that rely heavily on WHO-supported programs.

To mitigate the impact, Sani called on Europe, China and wealthy Arab Gulf states to step in and provide the financial support needed to sustain the organization’s operations.
“I wish to call on Europe, China and rich Arab Gulf countries to fill up the financial gap left behind by the U.S. exit,” he said.

Precise Post recalls that  Shehu Sani’s remarks add to growing international concern over the implications of reduced funding for the WHO, as global health experts warn that weakened multilateral cooperation could leave the world less prepared for future pandemics and cross-border health crises.
