ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Thursday said the Federal Government has intensified border surveillance and screening measures across the country to prevent the outbreak of the Ebola virus disease in Nigeria.
Tunji-Ojo disclosed this on his X handle on Thursday after participating in a high-level emergency preparedness meeting held in Lagos on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to the minister, the meeting, chaired by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, brought together key stakeholders including the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, health authorities, security agencies, and emergency response officials to assess Nigeria’s preparedness against the deadly virus.
He noted that although there is currently no confirmed case of Ebola in the country, the government is taking proactive steps to avert any possible outbreak.
Tunji-Ojo said the Ministry of Interior is focusing on strengthening border control and enforcing rigorous screening procedures at airports, seaports, and land borders nationwide.
He added that surveillance and monitoring systems are also being enhanced through the deployment of technology and structured decision-making mechanisms aimed at preventing the virus from entering the country.
The minister further assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would continue to collaborate with state governments, the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, and other relevant agencies to contain any potential health threat.
Drawing lessons from Nigeria’s successful containment of the 2014 Ebola outbreak, Tunji-Ojo expressed confidence in the country’s capacity to respond effectively should the need arise.
