The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, has said there is no evidence to prove his claim that he won the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party.
Obi made the controversial admission during an interview with *BBC Africa* on October 6, 2026, while discussing his claim about the outcome of the 2023 election and his plans for the 2027 presidential election.
What Peter Obi Said
When pressed for evidence to justify his claim that he won the election, the former Anambra State governor said:
“There’s no evidence. Everything is not based on evidence.”
Despite the admission, Obi maintained his position that he won the contest.
“I won the election and that’s where I will end. I don’t like going back to the past. I won the election (2023). Well, there’s no evidence but I won the election,” he said.
Speaking further on his repeated claim that the 2023 election was rigged, Obi added:
“Frankly I don’t like going back to the past but I still think what I think. I sustain what I said.”
2023 Presidential Election Result
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, winner of the February 25, 2023 polls.

Obi and Atiku both challenged the outcome at the Presidential Election Petition Court. The tribunal dismissed the petitions on September 6, 2023. The Supreme Court subsequently upheld Tinubu’s victory on October 26, 2023. 65a7
Fuel Subsidy Position
During the same BBC interview, Obi also addressed his position on fuel subsidy, saying his stance had not changed despite criticism that his comments had shifted.
He said his position had always included concerns about corruption in the subsidy regime.
“I talked about the corruption. The corruption is the problem of the subsidy,” Obi said. 52c6
On tackling corruption if elected in 2027, he said: “If you are not stealing, if you are not involved, your wife and family are not involved, you reduce it by 50 percent.”
The interview has sparked massive reactions on social media, with many Nigerians reacting to Obi’s admission that he has no evidence while still insisting he won the election.
