ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – The Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), Zacch Adedeji, has disclosed that Nigeria’s revenue collections rose from N21.6 trillion to over N28 trillion in 2025, attributing the progress to ongoing efforts to strengthen revenue generation and transform the nation’s economy.
Adedeji made the disclosure on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, while declaring open the 56th Annual Accountants’ Conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), where he served as Special Guest of Honour.
According to a statement released on the NRS’s official X handle on Wednesday, Adedeji, a Fellow of ICAN, reaffirmed the critical role of the accounting profession in strengthening Nigeria’s economy and building effective public institutions.
Speaking on the conference theme, “Beyond Numbers: Strengthening the Economy, Securing the Nation,” the NRS chairman said national development should not be measured solely by revenue figures, budgets and economic growth statistics, but also by the strength of institutions, the competitiveness of businesses and citizens’ confidence in the future.
He described the landmark tax reforms signed into law by President Bola Tinubu in June 2025 as a foundation for building a simpler, fairer and more efficient tax system.
Adedeji stressed that taxation should go beyond revenue generation to support business expansion, create employment opportunities and strengthen the government’s capacity to finance national development.
He also urged accounting professionals to embrace innovation, integrity, transparency and accountability while adapting to the transformative effects of technology and artificial intelligence on the profession.
The NRS chairman called on ICAN to deepen its involvement in economic policy development, ethical leadership and national transformation, emphasising that effective public resource management must assess not only expenditure but also the outcomes achieved.
He further reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with ICAN in taxpayer education, professional development, policy engagement and the promotion of voluntary tax compliance under the new tax framework.
Adedeji subsequently declared the conference open, congratulating the institute’s leadership and members while urging accountants to become active contributors to Nigeria’s economic transformation and national development.
