ABUJA (PRECISE POST)  –  The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and the African Petroleum Producers’ Organization (APPO) have officially established the Africa Energy Bank (AEB), a pan-African financial institution designed to mobilise funding for the continent’s energy sector.

The establishment was announced on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at the bank’s inaugural General Meeting held in Abuja, marking a significant step towards strengthening Africa’s capacity to finance its energy development.

With an authorised capital of $5 billion, the Africa Energy Bank is expected to provide financial support for projects across the entire energy value chain, including exploration, production, transportation, processing, refining and distribution.

According to an announcement published on Afreximbank’s official X handle, the institution is designed to strengthen African participation in the energy industry, reduce the continent’s dependence on imported petroleum products and promote intra-African energy trade.

The bank will operate as an independent, supranational pan-African financial institution, with plans to attract investments from governments, national oil companies, financial institutions and private-sector investors.

The inaugural General Meeting also appointed Mr Helmy Ghazi as the bank’s first President and constituted its maiden Board of Directors, comprising representatives from the public and private sectors as well as leading policy institutions.

The establishment of the Africa Energy Bank is expected to address financing challenges confronting Africa’s energy industry by providing a dedicated institution to support investments and facilitate the development of energy infrastructure across the continent.

The initiative also reflects the commitment of Afreximbank and APPO to strengthening Africa’s energy security, expanding indigenous capacity and promoting greater regional cooperation in the petroleum and energy sectors.

The bank’s emergence is expected to provide a new financing platform for African energy projects at a time when access to capital remains critical to developing the continent’s vast energy resources and strengthening its position in the global energy market.
