LAGOS – Mr Ademola Olisa, the Party Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Somolu Local Government Area, has called for stronger democratic institutions and greater citizens’ participation to deepen Nigeria’s democracy.

Olisah made the call in an interview with newsmen in Lagos, on Friday.

He said that Nigeria had recorded significant progress since the return to democratic rule in 1999.

According to him, the country’s democratic experience has strengthened political participation, freedom of expression and the conduct of regular elections at different levels of government.

Olisa called intensified efforts to address challenges affecting democratic consolidation, including electoral irregularities, weak institutions and inadequate political education.

“Democracy is not just about conducting elections. It is about building strong institutions, ensuring accountability and making the government responsive to the needs of the people.

“We have made progress since 1999, but there is still room for improvement. Our institutions must be strengthened to protect democratic values and ensure justice for all citizens,” he said.

The APC chieftain urged political parties to embrace internal democracy and provide equal opportunities for members seeking elective positions.

He added that transparent party primaries and respect for party rules wouod help improve public confidence in the democratic process.

“Political parties are important pillars of democracy. When internal democracy is respected, it becomes easier to produce credible leaders and reduce political disputes.

“Leaders must always put national interest above personal ambition.

“Democracy thrives when there is fairness, inclusion and respect for the rule of law,” he said.(NAN)
