School Curriculum Review: Education Minister Receives Widespread Commendation

by Joy: News Admin

As Nigerian schools prepare to reopen for the 2025/2026 academic session, the recent overhaul of the national curriculum by the Federal Ministry of Education is drawing praise from education stakeholders.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, had earlier announced a comprehensive review of the curriculum for Primary, Junior Secondary (JSS), and Senior Secondary (SSS) education. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize the nation’s education system and align it with global standards.

On Sunday, September 7, 2025, the Ministry took to its official social media platforms to reaffirm the rollout of the revised curriculum, branding it under the theme:
“Lighter Load, Stronger Minds – Nigeria’s New School Curriculum (2025/26).”

Stakeholders React Positively

Reacting to the development, Binzak Azeez, a legal practitioner and education advocate, commended the Minister’s efforts during an exclusive interview with Legit.ng.

“It’s a commendable move by the Federal Government. Redesigning the curriculum to reflect the demands of a modern society is essential. The newly introduced focus on digital literacy, robotics, artificial intelligence, and subject-based skills is both timely and visionary,” Azeez stated.

He added that such a reform would enhance cognitive development in children and build a stronger academic foundation.

“The early stages of education—primary and secondary—are critical in shaping how young minds process and apply knowledge. A curriculum that fails to evolve with global trends puts the future of learners at risk,” he added.

Call for Investment in Teachers

While praising the curriculum overhaul, Azeez stressed the importance of matching this academic reform with improvements in teacher welfare.

“A revised curriculum without a corresponding investment in teachers will undermine the entire objective. To achieve meaningful impact, the Ministry must prioritize teacher remuneration, training, and overall welfare.”

He urged the Federal Government to collaborate with key stakeholders, including state governments and education unions, to implement a sustainable support system for teachers across all levels.

“Education reforms must be holistic. Teachers are the drivers of curriculum delivery. If they are underpaid and under-supported, the system fails—regardless of how well the curriculum is designed,” he said.

Forward-Thinking Curriculum

The newly updated curriculum introduces subjects that prepare students for the future workforce, including digital literacy, artificial intelligence, robotics, and practical skill acquisition. These additions aim to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world application, equipping Nigerian students with the tools needed to thrive in a tech-driven global economy.

As the 2025/2026 academic year begins, all eyes will be on the implementation of these changes and how they shape the learning experience in classrooms across the country.
