The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate and a leading figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections, Peter Obi has said he could leave the party if its presidential primary is compromised.
Obi made the remark on Monday night during an appearance on Arise News Prime Time, where he also defended his history of political defections.
He said he left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after alleging that its presidential primary process had become transactional, adding that he could not participate in what he described as vote-buying or compromise within party structures.
According to him, his earlier exits from other political parties, including the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), were also driven by disagreements over internal party practices and fairness.
When asked if he would leave the ADC under similar circumstances, Obi said he would not hesitate to walk away if the party’s primary process is compromised.
“I don’t have a long time in politics. But if I have a long time, if I have to do it 20 times, I will do it exactly – leave the ADC. I will not be part of compromise,” he said.
He added that he remains committed to speaking out against any form of irregularity, insisting he has never been involved in rigging at any level of elections.
Obi also alleged that the crisis within the Labour Party was politically influenced, claiming the ruling government played a role in deepening the party’s internal disputes.
