ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio has reiterated that the 10th National Assembly is commitment of passing tax reforms bills that would strengthen the nation’s economic foundation and improve governance.
Akpabio disclosed this on Monday while addressing the gathering made up of lawmakers, tax administrators, business leaders, Civil Society Organisations and citizens at the opening of the Two-Day Public Hearing on the Proposed Tax Reform Bills.
The Senate President underscored the need for a modernized, transparent, and efficient tax system as a foundation for national prosperity. He likened the nation’s growth to a bird that must leave its nest to experience the richness of the forest, urging the abandonment of outdated tax practices in favor of reforms that would boost economic growth, encourage compliance, and enhance transparency.
Precise Post recalls that the proposed bills—SB 583, SB 584, SB 585, and SB 586—seek to harmonize revenue administration, reduce the cost of tax collection, and introduce digital innovations aimed at simplifying tax payments.
The Senate President stressed that these reforms would not only foster fairness but also protect vulnerable taxpayers and promote a more equitable economic environment.
Akpabio therefore encouraged stakeholders from all sectors to actively engage in the dialogue, emphasizing that only through collaboration could Nigeria achieve a tax system that works for everyone. He enjoined all participants to contribute toward a tax system that inspires confidence and drives national growth.
