The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has raised serious concerns over what it describes as the increasing politicisation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA’s National Coordinator, condemned the recent detention of former Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal, calling it a politically-motivated act aimed at destabilizing the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
HURIWA alleged that the EFCC has abandoned its core mandate of impartial anti-corruption enforcement and is now functioning as a strategic enforcer for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Every discerning Nigerian can see the handwriting on the wall. The EFCC is no longer the fearless watchdog it was meant to be. Instead, it has been reduced to a loyal foot soldier doing the bidding of the APC,” the statement read.
The organization further criticized what it described as selective justice, accusing the EFCC of targeting opposition figures while turning a blind eye to alleged infractions within the ruling party.
“This is not a war against corruption—it is the weaponization of anti-corruption tools to silence, intimidate, and dismantle political opponents,” HURIWA added.
HURIWA called on civil society, the judiciary, and the international community to take note of what it termed the increasing erosion of democratic institutions in Nigeria, warning that such trends pose a long-term threat to the country’s political stability.
