Uncertainty looms in the political camp of former President Goodluck Jonathan as speculation grows over the platform he may adopt should he decide to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Sources close to Jonathan told Vanguard that ongoing consultations have delayed any official declaration, with heated debates over whether to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he is a founding member, or to join the restructured African Democratic Congress (ADC).
A PDP insider disclosed that Jonathan’s loyalists remain split. “There is optimism in the camp, but also hesitation. While the ADC appears aligned with many of Jonathan’s associates, there are still strong power dynamics in both parties that must be carefully evaluated,” the source said.
The presence of influential figures such as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in the PDP, and Dumebi Kachikwu, ADC’s 2023 presidential candidate, has reportedly complicated the decision-making process.
Adding to the dilemma are ongoing legal battles over the leadership of both PDP and ADC. Political observers believe the outcomes of these disputes could significantly influence Jonathan’s eventual choice.
While some of Jonathan’s advisers favor a return to the PDP because of its history and ideological foundation, others argue that the ADC may offer him a fresh start with fewer internal conflicts and less political baggage.
Reports also suggest that some former governors and top party officials have begun discreet efforts to rally a coalition behind Jonathan if he chooses to run. According to insiders, the objective is to position him as a unifying candidate who can exploit divisions within both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the fragmented opposition.
Despite the growing speculation, Jonathan has not made any formal statement regarding his intentions. Close aides insist he is “taking his time to weigh all options” before making a move.
For now, his camp remains focused on ensuring that any eventual decision is strategic and capable of uniting diverse political blocs ahead of the 2027 general elections.
