ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Nigeria’s High Commissioner-designate to South Africa, Ambassador Femi Fani-Kayode, has formally commenced his diplomatic duties following the presentation of copies of his Letters of Credence to the South African government.
Fani-Kayode disclosed this in a statement posted on his official X handle on Saturday, announcing that he presented the documents on Friday, October 30, 2026, to Mr Clayson Monyela, Deputy Director-General, Public Diplomacy, and Acting Chief of State Protocol at South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO).
The presentation marked a significant milestone in his diplomatic assignment, formally signalling the commencement of his functions as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to South Africa with effect from October 30.
Following the presentation, the Nigerian envoy also held a meeting with Ambassador Seboga, Deputy Director-General of DIRCO, at his office as part of his initial diplomatic engagements with senior South African government officials.
According to Fani-Kayode, the presentation of copies of his Letters of Credence precedes the formal ceremonial presentation of the original documents to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
He disclosed that the ceremony, which will officially complete the accreditation process, is expected to take place in a few days.
The former Minister of Aviation expressed gratitude over the development.
Precise Post recalls that President Bola Tinubu initially approved Fani-Kayode’s ambassadorial posting on Friday, March 6, 2026, assigning him to Germany as Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate.
However, on Thursday, May 7, 2026, Tinubu approved his redeployment to South Africa following Fani-Kayode’s request for a change of posting. The redeployment involved a swap with Senator Ita Enang who was initially posted to South Africa but subsequently assigned to Germany.
