ABUJA – Erstwhile governor of Sokoto state, Aminu Tambuwal has congratulated Chess Master Tunde Onakoya on breaking chess marathon record.

The federal lawmaker representing North West senatorial district of Sokoto state in the 10th senate, while commending Tunde, said his quest has again reiterated the Nigerian spirit of determination, resilience, focus, discipline, and a total commitment to impact making.

Precise Post recalls that Tunde, a campaigning Nigerian chess champion has played the game non-stop for 58 hours to break the world record.

Tunde Onakoya who is 29 years old, hopes to raise $1m (£800,000) for children’s education across Africa through the marathon attempt that began in New York City’s Times Square on Wednesday.

The Guinness World Record is yet to publicly comment about Mr Onakoya’s bid because it sometimes takes weeks for the organisation to confirm any new record.

According to Sky News, Mr Onakoya played against Shawn Martinez, a US chess champion, in line with guidelines that any record attempt must be made by two players playing continuously for the entire duration.

Support had been growing online and at the scene, where African music kept spectators entertained.

The record attempt is “for the dreams of millions of children across Africa without access to education,” said Mr Onakoya, who founded Chess in Slums Africa in 2018.

The charity aims to support the education of at least one million of the continent’s poorest children.

Tambuwal who took to his X account to identify with Tunde over his victory said:

“I want to personally congratulate you, Chess Master @Tunde_OD, on breaking chess marathon record. Tunde Onakoya

“Your quest has again reiterated the Nigerian spirit of determination, resilience, focus, discipline, and a total commitment to impact making.

“Needless to add that education, the course to which you embarked on this global journey for, is a noble one.

“Owing to the importance we placed on education, under my watch as the Governor of Sokoto State, we allocated 29% in most of our budget to education, surpassing the UNESCO’s recommendation of 26%.

“In 2018, our action earned us UNESCO Education Solution Stakeholders Award, which was in recognition of our modest contributions to the education sector.

“I wish you and your team well as you continue to campaign and advocate for the education of underprivileged children across the continent of Africa through your Chess in Slums Africa initiative. -AWT
