ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed a Federal Executive Council (FEC) committee to implement urgent measures aimed at addressing Nigeria’s escalating food prices, in what signals a more aggressive government approach to the nation’s food security crisis.
According to the statement released on Thursday by the office of the Special Assistant to PBAT on Social Media @Dolusegun16, the central focus of the directive is to guarantee the safe and unhindered movement of farm produce across the country. The government hopes that easing transportation bottlenecks will lower logistics costs and, in turn, reduce the prices of food items in markets nationwide.
This move aligns with the President’s broader goal of achieving food sovereignty — not only ensuring food availability but also making it affordable, accessible, and nutritionally adequate on a sustainable basis.
In addition to transport-focused reforms, the government is preparing to roll out a Farmer Soil Health Scheme. The initiative targets improved agricultural productivity by tackling soil fertility issues across the country’s farming regions.
Furthermore, a renewed cooperative reform programme is on the horizon, aimed at mobilising resources and enhancing the participation of rural farmers in the national economy. The presidency described the cooperative sector as a powerful tool for grassroots economic development, income generation, and improved livelihoods.
Precise Post recalls that the announcement is coming amid growing public concern over persistent food inflation, insecurity affecting agricultural zones, and widespread supply chain disruptions.
The administration believes that facilitating the free movement of food, along with renewed support for farmers, will form the foundation for stabilising prices and building long-term agricultural resilience.
