The African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition has issued a strong warning to former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, cautioning that his political career could be at risk if he decides to withdraw from the coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to Naija News, the warning follows recent comments by the Director-General of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, who stated on Monday that Peter Obi would contest the 2027 presidential election with or without the ADC’s coalition ticket. Tanko also called on the coalition to zone its presidential ticket to the South instead of the North.
In response, Comrade Abayomi Bello of the ADC Youth Vanguard said if Tanko’s statement truly reflects Obi’s intentions, the former Anambra State Governor could be jeopardizing his political legacy. Bello argued that leaving the coalition due to not securing the presidential ticket would damage Obi’s credibility and paint him as a politician driven by personal ambition rather than national interest.
“In light of reports suggesting Mr. Peter Obi may exit the ADC coalition if he doesn’t get the presidential ticket, we caution that such a move could signal the end of his political journey,” Bello said in a statement on Tuesday.
Bello emphasized that Obi has built a reputation based on integrity, youth empowerment, and nation-first politics — qualities that would be undermined by another party switch.
“With a history of switching parties — from APGA to PDP to Labour, and now possibly another — Nigerians may begin to see Mr. Obi not as a reformer, but as yet another self-centered politician,” he added.
The ADC Youth Vanguard further urged Obi to demonstrate patience and commitment to the coalition’s broader vision instead of focusing solely on personal ambitions.
“Coalitions thrive on negotiation, patience, and compromise. By leaving prematurely, Mr. Obi risks losing allies, alienating supporters, and frustrating young Nigerians already weary of divided opposition forces,” Bello warned.
Bello concluded by encouraging Obi to leverage his influence to mentor emerging leaders, strengthen the coalition’s policies, and build long-term political structures that would leave a lasting legacy.
“True legacy comes from guiding others and shaping a sustainable political future. Anything else risks political isolation,” he stressed.
