Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has clarified why he was not present during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent condolence visit to Kano.
In a statement shared by a close associate on Saturday, July 19, Ganduje explained that his absence was due to a long-scheduled private trip to London, which had been planned before the President’s visit was announced.
“It was not a snub or an act of disrespect to Mr President or the good people of Kano. Dr Ganduje left for London five days after resigning as APC Chairman. The trip had been arranged well before the President’s condolence schedule became public,” the associate explained.
Tinubu’s Visit and Speculations Online
President Tinubu visited Kano on Friday to offer condolences following the passing of elder statesman Alhaji Sani Abacha. The visit was warmly received by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and other prominent political leaders in the state.
However, Ganduje’s absence quickly sparked speculation across social media, with some suggesting it might signal tension between the former APC chairman and the President, especially in light of Ganduje’s recent resignation.
No Rift With President Tinubu
Ganduje’s allies firmly dismissed the rumours, reaffirming his unwavering loyalty to President Tinubu and the APC.
“There is no bad blood between Dr Ganduje and President Tinubu. His London trip was purely personal. He remains deeply committed to the President’s leadership and the party’s vision,” the associate added.
Supporters of the former Kano governor have urged the public to disregard speculation of a political fallout, describing Ganduje as dedicated to the peace, unity, and progress of the nation.
“People should stop spreading unfounded rumours. Dr Ganduje fully supports the President’s efforts to advance Nigeria,” said a party loyalist in Kano.
Ganduje’s New Appointment After APC Resignation
Ganduje stepped down as APC National Chairman on Friday, June 27, 2025, following months of internal party tensions, particularly in Kano State.
Barely two weeks later, President Tinubu appointed Ganduje as Chairman of the Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). His appointment was formally announced during the inauguration of new FAAN board members in Abuja on Wednesday, July 9.
The appointment is seen as a strategic move to keep Ganduje actively involved in national development, while affirming his continued relevance within the ruling party.
