A member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BOT), Ejiofor Onyia, has declared that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has no authority to determine the direction of the party.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Onyia stressed that Wike does not occupy any executive position in the PDP and therefore cannot dictate its decisions.
The BOT member further accused the FCT Minister of working in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that his influence within the PDP has been overstated.
PDP’s Zoning Decision and Wike’s Position
Onyia’s statement followed the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the PDP, where the party zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South.
When asked whether the zoning decision was aligned with Wike’s interests, Onyia maintained that the minister’s stance is irrelevant to the party’s constitutional process.
“Let me make it clear—we have a party and an executive guided by a constitution. As of today, the FCT Minister is working for an opposition party. He does not hold any executive role in the PDP, so he has no power to decide what the party does,” Onyia said.
He added that while Wike may express personal opinions, such views do not bind or influence the party’s constitutional mandate.
Party Unity and Internal Power Play
Onyia’s remarks highlight the growing tension within the PDP, where some stakeholders accuse Wike of being more aligned with APC interests than those of his own party.
Despite Wike’s political stature, Onyia reiterated that PDP decisions are guided by its constitution and collective leadership, not by the personal interests of individuals.
The BOT member urged members and supporters to remain focused on strengthening the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections, rather than being distracted by controversies surrounding individual politicians.
