ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Mr. Kayode Opeifa on Sunday tendered unreserved apology to the immediate past President of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) and Transportation correspondent of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Comrade Ladi Bala in particular and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council in general for the verbal abuse he meted to her on Friday.
Precise Post recalls that it was reported that Comrade Bala was subjcted to unprovoked humiliation and degradation while performing her professional and lawful duties of covering the aftermath of the train derailment along the Abuja-Kaduna rail line by the MD using words like “you are stupid, your management is stupid, foolish woman, ‘look at you, you are not even properly dressed, useless.” Who is watching NTA “ and so on.
Opeifa, who aggressively questioned her presence, disrupted her live reporting in the process and threatened her with physical removal, and eventually ordered security personnel to bundle her away from the scene.
Further recall that the NUJ FCT Council had earlier condemned in very strong terms the harassment, intimidation, and verbal abuse meted out on Comrade Ladi Bala, and demanded that the MD should tender an apology for his unprofessional conduct.
Opeifa not only denied the news making rounds that he is not a friend of the media, he reiterated his support to the media and promised to aid journalists in their quest to guarantee timely coverage of activities of the NRC. He said two derailed and one coach capsized.
He further stated that eight coaches were affected during the accident while those in the Business Class didnt know that there was an accident until they were informed.
