Defections: PDP Leaders Seek Alliance With Opposition Parties Ahead of 2027 Elections

Amid ongoing defections of governors, lawmakers, and party leaders to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), some senior figures within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are reportedly considering forming a strategic alliance with other opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Naija News recalls that the PDP Governors’ Forum had, on April 14, 2025, publicly distanced itself from the opposition coalition that led to the creation of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), affirming its loyalty to the PDP and insisting it would not join any merger or coalition.

However, recent developments indicate that several PDP chieftains—including national and zonal officers—are now open to exploring alliances with credible opposition parties to build a stronger front against the APC.

According to a member of the PDP convention planning committee who spoke with Punch on condition of anonymity, internal discussions are underway among party leaders on the possibility of collaborating with other opposition forces, given the party’s dwindling influence in some regions.

He said, “If we are being honest, the series of defections has weakened our political base. The South-East and South-South, which were once PDP strongholds, are no longer firmly under our control. The situation in Rivers State, for instance, has worsened with the influence of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, who has done significant damage to the party.”

He added that the ADC is gaining ground in the North, while the APC continues to dominate the South-West, largely because the President hails from that region.

“Our best option now is to enter a strategic alliance with credible opposition parties. Discussions are already ongoing, and the idea is receiving growing support among our members. After the convention, we’ll decide the way forward,” he stated.

Similarly, the South-West PDP Chairman, Kamorudeen Ajisafe, stressed the importance of collective efforts to challenge the ruling APC in 2027.

He, however, dismissed fears that recent defections of PDP governors to the APC would cripple the party’s electoral chances, insisting that good governance and credible elections would still determine victory.

“We need a united democratic effort to remove this current administration. There’s no escaping that,” Ajisafe said.

“But if the 2027 elections are credible and transparent, you’ll be surprised that these defections will have little or no effect on the PDP’s performance. Many Nigerians are disillusioned with the APC — all we need is a free and fair poll,” he added.
