The Anambra State Police Command has identified a 28-year-old man, Ifesinachi Ezeolu, as the individual operating a masquerade accused of assaulting and intimidating residents of Awgbu community in Orumba South Local Government Area.
The disclosure follows growing public outrage over reports that the masquerade was used to harass and instil fear among residents during its recent appearance in the community.
In a statement on Sunday, police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga said the Command respects cultural and traditional practices but stressed that no tradition should be used as a shield for criminal behaviour or abuse of citizens’ rights.
“The Nigeria Police Force recognises and respects the cultural and traditional practices of the people,” Ikenga said.
“However, no cultural activity or belief system should be used to harass, assault, intimidate or violate the fundamental human rights of citizens.”
He noted that masquerade activities, like all public gatherings, must be conducted peacefully and within the law, warning that any act capable of causing fear, injury or public disorder would attract police action.
Ikenga added that investigations are ongoing to identify and prosecute other individuals linked to the incident.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to public safety, saying the police would work closely with traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders to ensure that cultural expressions are celebrated without endangering lives or property.
