A 28-year-old man from Highwood Phase 2, Concession, has been convicted of unlawful entry after being caught wearing a jacket he had stolen from a neighbour—just days after the break-in.
Marlvin Chakanyuka broke into a 46-year-old man’s room in August 2025 while the owner was away, making off with a stonewash jean jacket, jean trousers, sneakers, a red-and-black Bluetooth speaker, and a blue-and-white blanket. The stolen items were valued at US$85, according to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ).
The theft came to light on 25 August 2025, around 1:00 pm, when the victim spotted Chakanyuka walking through the same neighbourhood—wearing the stolen stonewash jacket.
When confronted, Chakanyuka fled before police could be called.
He was later arrested, convicted, and sentenced to 24 months in prison. The court suspended:
-
7 months for five years on condition of good behaviour
-
1 month on condition he pays US$85 restitution
-
16 months on condition he completes 560 hours of community service
In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority said it “reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding communities against unlawful entry and theft.”
The case echoes a similar incident in Mbare in October, where two men were jailed after being caught wearing clothes stolen during a break-in. The pair had stolen groceries, clothing, and household items worth about US$500 and were convicted by the Mbare Magistrates’ Court.
