Abuja — (PRECISE POST) – Senator Nwachukwu Emmanuel, representing Anambra South Senatorial District, has raised the alarm over worsening erosion, failing federal roads and collapsing transport infrastructure in the zone, warning that the situation could trigger a major transportation and humanitarian crisis if urgent action is not taken.
The Senator explained that these concerns informed his first motion on the floor of the Senate, which he said was aimed at drawing federal attention to what he described as an existential threat to communities and economic activities in Anambra South.
Speaking with journalists after plenary, Senator Nwachukwu described the district as the epicentre of erosion in Nigeria, noting that several communities and major transport corridors are under severe and immediate threat.
One of the most critical erosion sites, according to him, is along the Onitsha–Owerri Road at Okija, where a section of the dual carriageway has already collapsed, leaving erosion dangerously close to the remaining lane.
“This highway is no longer an Anambra road alone. It connects Imo, Abia, Rivers and other neighbouring states. If it is cut off, the implications will be catastrophic,” the Senator warned.
He also highlighted the deplorable state of the Oba–Nnewi–Amichi–Uga road, which he said has remained largely unfinished since 2003, with less than 50 per cent of the project completed despite its strategic economic importance.
In addition, Senator Nwachukwu disclosed that the collapse of an old metal bridge constructed in the 1960s—while two replacement bridges are still under construction—has cut off several communities, disrupted trade, increased transportation costs and restricted access to healthcare and education.
“These are not abstract figures. These are real human challenges affecting traders, students, patients and entire communities,” he said.
The lawmaker explained that although the motion had been listed on the Senate Order Paper since November 2025, legislative scheduling delayed its consideration until now. He expressed optimism following what he described as strong bipartisan support in the Senate.
“I am encouraged by the clear directive of the Senate President to the Committee on Works to urgently intervene,” he stated.
According to him, the Senate Committee on Works has scheduled an on-the-spot assessment of the affected roads within the next two weeks, with the aim of compelling immediate action by the Federal Ministry of Works.
On Onitsha Main Market Closure
Reacting to the recent closure of the Onitsha Main Market, Senator Nwachukwu called for calm and collective responsibility, describing the development as emotionally charged but one that requires honest reflection.
He noted that May 30 has long been observed across Igboland as a day of remembrance for lives lost during the civil war, predating the current sit-at-home protests. However, he warned that the continued enforcement of sit-at-home orders over the past three years has inflicted serious economic damage on the South-East.
“Our region contributes less than eight percent to Nigeria’s GDP. By shutting down economic activities every Monday, we are unintentionally shrinking our own economy further,” he said.
The Senator noted that the trend has forced banks and corporate institutions to reduce operating days, discouraged investment and weakened commercial activity across the region.
Commends Soludo
Senator Nwachukwu commended Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, for what he described as decisive leadership in restoring security and stabilising the state’s economy.
He praised the establishment of the Agụnechemba Security Network, the passage of enabling security laws and the provision of modern equipment, which he said significantly reduced criminal activity and boosted public confidence during the last festive season.
“Governor Soludo is a world-class economist who understands that no economy can grow under fear and uncertainty. His administration has constructed over 750 kilometres of roads and restored confidence in Anambra,” the Senator said.
He expressed full support for the governor’s determination to end sit-at-home disruptions, describing the policy as essential for protecting livelihoods and ensuring long-term economic growth.
Appeal to Traders
The Senator appealed to traders at the Onitsha Main Market and residents across the state to cooperate with government authorities and market leadership in the collective interest of economic recovery.
“All these efforts are for the benefit of our people. A stable and secure business environment will lead to growth, prosperity and better opportunities for everyone,” he said.
He urged Ndi-Anambra to remain law-abiding and united, stressing that sustainable development can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace, security and cooperation.
