Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike has warned that former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress, ADC, vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, may find it difficult to campaign in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike issued the warning on Friday in Abuja, after a meeting with chairmen of the six area councils in the FCT, while reacting to Amaechi’s recent claim that only thieves would vote for President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
According to Wike, such comments are inflammatory and unacceptable, and Rivers people would not tolerate insults directed at supporters of the President.
“If he continues this line, it will be difficult for him to campaign in Rivers. We will not take that. If security agencies and INEC can fold their hands, that’s their business, but we will not allow it,” Wike said.
The FCT Minister described Amaechi’s statement as unbecoming of a politician seeking national office and called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and security agencies to caution against rhetoric capable of heating up the polity.
Wike maintained that political campaigns should be issue-based rather than driven by personal attacks and name-calling.
Wike has repeatedly launched verbal attacks against the ADC vice-presidential candidate since the commencement of campaigns for the 2027 elections.
Political analysts have warned that the forthcoming elections in Rivers State could be marred by violence if security agencies fail to effectively discharge their responsibilities and check inflammatory statements by political actors.
