KADUNA (PRECISE POST) – Cracks are widening within the Kaduna State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 governorship election, as disputes over consensus arrangements, allegations of candidate imposition and deepening rivalries among party power blocs threaten the unity of the ruling party.
The emerging tensions come despite the increasing political influence of Governor Uba Sani, whose firm grip on the party structure has sparked unease among some stakeholders and aspirants who fear they are being sidelined through the consensus model championed by the party leadership.
At the heart of the controversy is the APC’s approach to selecting candidates for elective positions, a process that critics argue has been manipulated to favour loyalists of the governor and his political allies. The disagreement has fuelled concerns that the party could be heading towards a major internal crisis if the grievances are not addressed before the 2027 polls.
Although Governor Sani has consistently defended consensus as a lawful and democratic mechanism recognised by both the Electoral Act and the APC constitution, opponents insist that its implementation in Kaduna has lacked transparency and fairness.
The controversy has been particularly pronounced in the party’s Senate and House of Representatives primaries, where some aspirants and party members claim they were edged out in favour of candidates perceived to enjoy the backing of the governor’s camp.
Beyond the debate over candidate selection, the dispute reflects a broader struggle for influence within the APC in a state long known for its complex political dynamics, shaped by ethnic considerations, religious balancing and fierce competition among elite power brokers.
For Governor Sani, who succeeded former governor Nasir el-Rufai in 2023, the challenge extends beyond seeking another term in office. He is also working to consolidate control of a party structure still populated by loyalists of his predecessor, whose relationship with the governor has deteriorated significantly in recent years.
The growing divide between supporters of El-Rufai and the current administration has continued to dominate political discussions in Kaduna, amid reports of emerging alliances and strategic realignments ahead of the next election cycle.
Despite the challenges, Governor Sani has continued efforts to broaden his support base through reconciliation initiatives and consultations across Kaduna Central, Kaduna North and Southern Kaduna, moves seen by observers as part of a wider strategy to strengthen his political position before 2027.
