ABUJA (PRECISEPOST) – Nigeria has secured a major leadership position at the United Nations, with the country’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Jimoh Ibrahim, elected Chairman of the Budget and Administration Committee of the UN General Assembly at a time the global body is grappling with a funding shortfall exceeding $1.8 billion.
Ibrahim’s election places him at the centre of efforts to navigate one of the most challenging financial periods in the organisation’s recent history, following significant reductions in foreign aid contributions that have strained the UN’s operations.
Speaking after his election on Tuesday, the former senator acknowledged the financial pressures confronting the organisation and stressed the need for innovative approaches to address the growing revenue challenges.
According to him, the current situation demands urgent and strategic action to manage deficit financing arising from multiple global complexities that continue to place heavy burdens on the UN’s finances.
The diplomat expressed confidence in his ability to build consensus among member states, citing his experience as a former member of the Nigerian Senate Committee on Budget and Appropriation as well as his role in inter-parliamentary relations.
Ibrahim also referenced the economic reforms being implemented by President Bola Tinubu in Nigeria, saying the lessons from those initiatives would help shape his approach to budget administration, appropriations and human resource management within the United Nations.
He thanked member states for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to provide effective leadership, strategic direction and sound corporate governance as chairman of the influential committee responsible for overseeing the UN’s budgetary and administrative
