Abuja (PRECISE POST) – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential candidate in the February 25 2023 general election and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of sticking to a “snatch and grab” approach to governance, with no apparent plans to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.

His statement follows controversial comments by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Public Communication, Mr. Sunday Dare, posted on his verified social media handle late on Saturday, February 2.

In a statement by the Atiku Media signed by Paul Ibe and released on his X account, Atiku said that in his first post, Dare discussed the need for countries to brace for economic challenges, referencing former President Donald Trump’s “America First” tariffs.

However, it was a second post that drew sharp criticism, in which Dare appeared to undermine the efforts of political leaders striving to advance democracy and good governance in Nigeria.

Atiku condemned the comments, which he argued depicted the upcoming elections as a “combat and a fight,” accusing the Tinubu administration of continuing its notorious “snatch and grab” political tactics.

He expressed concern that such rhetoric signified the government’s disregard for the principles of democracy.

“The gathering of political leaders last week was aimed at fostering democratic ideals, ensuring that future elections are credible, and that democracy serves as a vehicle for progress and social justice in Nigeria,” Atiku said. “It is curious that the Tinubu government would respond to these noble aspirations with what they describe as ‘Machiavellian inclinations.’”

The former Vice President further criticized Dare’s remarks regarding the “Tariff War,” which sought to link Tinubu’s administration with President Trump’s protectionist trade policies. Atiku called the comments “careless” and warned that such remarks could negatively impact Nigeria’s diplomatic relations with the United States and other international trade partners.

Atiku also expressed his dissatisfaction with the Tinubu administration’s approach to unity, accusing the government of deepening divisions along class, ethnic, and religious lines. He pointed out that under this government, Nigerians are now treated differently based on their social class and access to resources.

“The Tinubu administration must shift from self-entitlement to embracing Nigeria First ideals,” he said. “The government should prioritize unity, healing, and a focus on the collective good of the nation.”

Atiku concluded his statement by urging the Tinubu government to refrain from careless remarks and instead work towards uniting the country, strengthening democracy, and fostering a spirit of patriotism that transcends partisan and ethnic divisions.
