ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu of undermining Nigeria’s security through corruption, incompetence and what he described as a gross misplacement of priorities.
In a statement issued on Wednesday signed by Paul Ibe, the opposition figure and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) reacted to a report by Daily Trust indicating that only seven percent of the 2025 budget allocation for military equipment had been released to the army.
Atiku described the figure as a “scandalous indictment” of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the government of paying lip service to Nigeria’s worsening security situation.
According to him, the low level of disbursement is inadequate to address the realities faced by troops on the battlefield, warning that poor funding directly weakens the military’s ability to defend the nation.
“A poorly equipped army can neither protect itself nor the country it is meant to serve,” he said, blaming corruption and delays in fund releases as key factors hampering efforts to tackle insecurity.
The Waziri of Adamawa further linked the situation to recent high-profile deaths among military commanders, arguing that insufficient funding and lack of urgency in implementing security budgets have contributed to operational failures.
He also accused the Tinubu administration of showing “cavalier indifference” to national security while focusing more on political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“No country can release just seven percent of funds for equipment and expect its military to perform miracles,” Atiku stated, adding that the government owes Nigerians an apology for what he termed “colossal incompetence and lethargy.”
Questioning the administration’s future electoral prospects, Atiku argued that a government driven by propaganda rather than measurable performance has no credible basis to seek re-election in 2027.
