ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – As Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day, the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, has called on citizens to renew their commitment to democratic principles, national unity, active citizenship, and responsible participation in governance.
In a Democracy Day message released on Thursday and signed by Paul Odenyi – Deputy Director
Media and Communication made available to Precise Post, Issa-Onilu described June 12 as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history and a powerful symbol of the resilience, courage, and determination of Nigerians in their struggle for democratic governance and the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms.
The NOA boss noted that democracy remains the most inclusive and accountable system of government, offering citizens the opportunity to freely choose their leaders, hold elected officials accountable, and participate actively in shaping the nation’s future.
According to him, Democracy Day is not only a time to honour the heroes and heroines who made sacrifices for the enthronement of democratic rule in Nigeria but also an occasion to celebrate the enduring spirit of Nigerians who continue to uphold democratic ideals despite prevailing challenges.
“Today, we celebrate not only the heroes and heroines who made sacrifices for the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria, but also the enduring spirit of the Nigerian people who continue to uphold democratic ideals despite various challenges. Democracy gives every citizen a voice and offers the best platform for peaceful national development, social justice, and economic progress,” he stated.
Issa-Onilu stressed that democracy extends beyond the conduct of periodic elections, emphasizing that it requires continuous citizen engagement, adherence to the rule of law, tolerance of differing opinions, civic responsibility, and dedication to the collective good.
He urged Nigerians, especially young people, to reject misinformation, political violence, hate speech, and other actions capable of undermining national cohesion and weakening democratic institutions.
The Director-General reaffirmed the commitment of the National Orientation Agency to deepening democratic culture through sustained voter education, civic enlightenment programmes, community engagement initiatives, and advocacy for responsible citizenship across the country.
“As the agency charged with promoting civic values, patriotism, and national consciousness, the National Orientation Agency remains committed to strengthening democratic culture through sustained voter and civic education, public enlightenment, community engagement, and advocacy for responsible citizenship,” he said.
Issa-Onilu also commended government institutions, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, religious leaders, media practitioners, and development partners for their contributions to democratic governance and peaceful coexistence in Nigeria.
He noted that the collective efforts of stakeholders have played a significant role in consolidating democratic gains and promoting stability across the nation.
The NOA chief further called on Nigerians to use the occasion of Democracy Day to reflect on the country’s democratic journey, embrace patriotism, and work together towards building a more united and prosperous nation.
He maintained that the success of democracy depends on the active participation of citizens and their willingness to uphold the values that strengthen democratic institutions.
The Director-General expressed optimism that with sustained commitment to democratic ideals, Nigeria would continue to advance on the path of peace, justice, development, and national progress.
