ABUJA ( PRECISE POST) — Senate President Godswill Akpabio has described drug abuse as one of the greatest threats confronting Nigeria, warning that the growing menace poses serious risks to public health, national security, and the country’s socio-economic development.

Represented by Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar at the  commemoration of the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking in Abuja on Friday, Akpabio said the increasing use of cannabis, cocaine, opioids, alcohol and other harmful substances among young Nigerians was destroying lives, weakening communities and threatening the nation’s future.

He stressed that tackling substance abuse requires collective responsibility, urging government, families, traditional and religious leaders, schools and communities to work together to prevent drug abuse through sustained education, awareness and early intervention.

According to him, beyond prevention, authorities must intensify efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks by strengthening intelligence gathering, tightening security at the nation’s borders, ports and airports, and ensuring that those involved in the illicit drug trade are brought to justice.

The Senate President said government must continue to strengthen policies, enforce existing laws and provide adequate resources to institutions responsible for combating drug abuse and trafficking.

He also urged traditional and religious leaders to use their influence to educate young people on the dangers of substance abuse, while calling on parents, teachers and community leaders to have open conversations with youths and guide them towards making responsible life choices.

Akpabio noted that although law enforcement remains essential in the fight against drugs, the country’s response must extend beyond arrests and prosecution to include prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and the social reintegration of persons affected by substance use disorders.

He commended the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and other partners for their sustained efforts in reducing drug abuse and illicit trafficking across Nigeria.

Calling for renewed commitment to the anti-drug campaign, the Senate President urged Nigerians to move beyond rhetoric by investing in prevention programmes, strengthening community support systems and providing hope and recovery opportunities for victims of drug abuse.

He expressed optimism that with sustained collaboration and commitment, Nigeria could build a future where every young person has the opportunity to live a healthy, productive and drug-free life.
