FG Declares Tuesday Public Holiday to Honour Late Former President Muhammadu Buhari

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of Nigeria’s late former president, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London at the age of 82.

According to Naija News, the holiday is part of a seven-day national mourning period earlier announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to pay tribute to Buhari’s service and legacy.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, the government called on Nigerians to reflect on the late president’s life of service and dedication.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday offers an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” the statement read.

Tunji-Ojo also urged citizens to mark the day by promoting peace, patriotism, and national unity — values that Buhari championed throughout his military and civilian leadership.

The statement further noted that national flags will continue to fly at half-mast during the mourning period, which runs from Sunday, July 13, to Saturday, July 19, 2025.

“The Federal Government extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late president, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, while praying for the peaceful repose of his soul,” the statement concluded.

Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1984–1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015–2023. His tenure was marked by a reputation for discipline, integrity, and a strong anti-corruption stance.
