Financial System Liquidity Hits ₦6.12trn as CBN Rejects OMO Bids

by Joy: News Admin

Liquidity in Nigeria’s financial system surged to ₦6.12 trillion after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) rejected about ₦5 trillion worth of subscriptions at its Open Market Operations (OMO) auction on Tuesday.

System liquidity closed at a net long position of ₦6.12 trillion, supported by an OMO maturity repayment of ₦2.14 trillion and increased placements by deposit money banks.

Data showed that banks’ placements at the CBN’s Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) window rose sharply to ₦3.92 trillion, reflecting excess liquidity in the system. Meanwhile, banks facing short-term liquidity gaps borrowed ₦14.30 billion from the Standing Lending Facility (SLF) window.

Despite the liquidity surge, money market rates remained firm. According to FMDQ data, the overnight lending rate closed at 22.79 per cent, while the open repo rate (OPR) settled at 22.50 per cent.

In the secondary market, Nigerian Treasury bills traded on a bullish note, driven by sustained investor demand for naira-denominated assets. As a result, the average benchmark yield declined marginally by 1 basis point to 18.45 per cent.

Similarly, the OMO secondary market recorded bullish sentiment, with the average benchmark yield easing by 1 basis point to 22.15 per cent.

Analysts at MarketForces said system liquidity is expected to remain relatively strong in the near term, despite anticipated debits from upcoming government and CBN operations.

However, liquidity is projected to moderate following the ₦1.54 trillion settlement for the January 2026 Federal Government bond auction scheduled for Wednesday, alongside an expected OMO auction.

Earlier, the CBN had floated an OMO bill auction worth ₦600 billion across two standard tenors to mop up excess liquidity. Investor demand was strong, with subscriptions reaching ₦4.9 trillion, but no allotment was made.

What This Means for Retail Investors

Interest Rates

Despite the surge in system liquidity, short-term interest rates remain elevated above 22 per cent. This suggests the CBN is still committed to a tight monetary stance, even while excess cash circulates in the banking system.

For retail investors, this means:

  • Money market funds are likely to continue offering attractive yields

  • Savings and fixed-deposit rates should remain relatively high in the near term

  • Borrowing costs for businesses and consumers will stay elevated

Bonds & Treasury Bills

The bullish trading seen in Treasury bills and OMO instruments indicates strong demand for naira assets, especially from investors seeking safety and yield.

Implications:

  • Bond and T-bill prices are rising, which pushes yields slightly lower

  • Investors buying new issues may face lower yields than previous auctions

  • Existing bondholders benefit from capital gains as yields ease

Upcoming government bond settlements, however, could temporarily tighten liquidity, potentially stabilising yields.

Foreign Exchange (FX)

High system liquidity typically raises concerns about pressure on the naira, but the CBN’s rejection of OMO bids shows an attempt to control excess liquidity without flooding the FX market.

What to watch:

  • Sustained high interest rates help support the naira

  • Strong demand for naira assets may attract foreign portfolio inflows

  • Any aggressive liquidity mop-up could reduce FX demand from banks

Overall, the current environment remains supportive of the naira in the short term, provided liquidity is carefully managed.

Bottom Line

For retail investors:

  • Cash and money market instruments remain attractive

  • Bond investors benefit from price stability and mild gains

  • FX risks are contained, but liquidity movements should be closely watched
