MAIDUGURI – The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, is currently in Borno State for the official distribution of relief materials to the flood victims in the state.
Precise Post recalls that items to be distributed to the victims comprise of 50 trucks of maize, 30 trucks of sorghum, and 20 trucks of millet.
Disclosing this on Sunday via his X account, Senator Kyari said:
“We are currently in Maiduguri, Borno State for the official distribution of relief materials to flood victims by the Federal Government.”
“A total of 100 trucks have been allocated, consisting of 50 trucks of maize, 30 trucks of sorghum, and 20 trucks of millet.” He added.
Recall that residential buildings, farms, hospitals and worship centres in Borno have been submerged by flood for some days now with yet to be to-be-ascertained number of lives lost.
Further recall, that officials from the United Nations and humanitarian organisations have visited Maiduguri over the devastating floods ravaging the area.
The team, comprising international and national non-governmental organisations (NGOs), was led by the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall.
They arrived in the Borno State capital on Saturday on an assessment visit over the Alau Dam flood disaster.
This was disclosed in a press release to journalists on Sunday by the National Information Officer of the UN Information Centre, Oluseyi Soremekun.
Soremekun said the team met with affected residents, government officials, and Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, to assess the damage and outline immediate support measures.
“The flood-affected people are facing a crisis within a crisis, as the floods occurred during a severe food insecurity and malnutrition crisis.
“I witnessed firsthand the devastation and hardship caused by the flooding, including the destruction of homes, businesses, and infrastructure. I also saw the suffering of the affected communities,” Fall stated.
The delegation promised swift action to alleviate the suffering of displaced families, including the provision of food, clean water, sanitation facilities, and shelter.
Precise Post recalls that five days ago after visiting Borno State with the Vice President, Kassim Shettima and others to sympathise with the government and people of the state, Senator Kyari also took his X account and said:
“I am deeply saddened by the unfortunate flooding that has ravaged our beloved Borno state, leaving behind a trail of devastation and sorrow. The floodwaters, which have submerged homes, damaged properties, and tragically affected lives, have also inundated sacred sites such as our cemeteries and critical infrastructure like the Maiduguri University Teaching Hospital. Our traders, who form the backbone of our local economy, have also faced significant losses as markets and businesses were hit by the flood.”
“In this difficult time, I extend my deepest sympathies to those who have lost loved ones and properties, as well as those who are displaced and facing the painful aftermath of this disaster. No words can adequately capture the depth of our grief, but please know that your government stands with you in these trying times. We will not rest until every possible measure is taken to bring relief and restore normalcy.”
“I urge all those in affected areas to prioritize their safety and heed the instructions of emergency services.”
“The resilience and unity of the people of Borno State have always been our strength. Together, we will overcome this crisis and rebuild stronger than ever.”
“Let us continue to pray for those who are suffering and lend a helping hand to our neighbours in need. Together, we will weather this storm.”
“May Allah protect Borno State and all its people.”
