ABUJA (PRECISE POST)  –   The Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has commended the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) for adopting a landmark resolution sponsored by Nigeria on the role of parliaments in restoring lasting peace worldwide.

The resolution, presented by Kalu at the 152nd IPU Assembly held in Istanbul, Turkey, underwent two days of intensive debate before gaining approval from member states. Titled “The Role of Parliaments in Establishing Robust Post-Conflict Management Mechanisms and Restoring a Just and Lasting Peace,” the proposal was refined by the IPU’s Peace and International Security Committee, which reviewed over 36 submissions before final adoption.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker, Levinus Nwabughiogu made available to Precise Post in Abuja.

The resolution emphasizes that sustainable peace must be anchored on justice, accountability, and national ownership of post-conflict recovery efforts.

Observers have described its adoption as a significant diplomatic achievement for Nigeria and a reflection of the growing influence of African parliaments in shaping global peace and security policies.

Reacting to the development, Kalu noted that the resolution would guide over 155 member parliaments to prioritize legislative frameworks that promote peacebuilding and conflict prevention.

He also acknowledged the contributions of his co-rapporteurs, Fati Belhirch of the Netherlands and Ahmad Al-Zu’bi of Jordan, for their collaboration during the drafting and review stages.

Kalu further expressed appreciation to IPU members for their support and commitment to global peace. Key provisions of the resolution affirm that lasting peace is only achievable through justice, including accountability for violations of international law and redress for victims.

It underscores the need for the cessation of aggression, withdrawal of unlawfully deployed foreign forces, and adherence to the United Nations Charter.

The document also highlights the importance of nationally led post-conflict recovery efforts, supported by strong institutions, inclusive governance, equitable economic rebuilding, and access to essential services such as healthcare and education.

It calls for transparency, democratic oversight, and alignment of international assistance with national priorities. Additionally, the resolution urges parliaments to combat impunity by strengthening cooperation with international accountability bodies, including the International Criminal Court, and to integrate environmental considerations into peacebuilding strategies.

It further advocates for inclusive political processes, active engagement of women and youth, and the establishment of legislative mechanisms to monitor the implementation of peace agreements and address root causes of conflict such as poverty, inequality, and marginalization.

Kalu emphasized that the resolution represents a comprehensive framework for achieving sustainable peace, stressing that “peace without justice is neither durable nor legitimate.”
