ABUJA (PRECISE POST)  –   The 183 members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Owerri Branch, who requisitioned an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM), have rescheduled the meeting for Thursday, October 15, 2026, following an alleged obstruction of their earlier attempt to convene the gathering.

The members, in a statement signed by Chidi B. Nworka, Esq., for and on behalf of the 183 requisitionists, said the meeting was initially scheduled for Saturday, October 10, at the Bar Centre within the Magistrates’ Court Complex, Owerri, but could not hold as planned.

According to the statement, the requisitionists had fixed the earlier meeting in exercise of their powers under Article 11(5) of the NBA Owerri Branch Bye-law, following what they described as the branch chairman’s failure to direct the secretary to issue a notice of the meeting within seven days, as required under Article 11(4).

The statement alleged that members who gathered at the entrance of the court complex at the appointed time discovered that the gate was locked, allegedly on the orders of the Chief Registrar of the Imo State High Court.

It further claimed that heavily armed police officers were present at the entrance, preventing access to the premises. The statement alleged that the officers were deployed following a petition purportedly written by Godson Killiwee-Nwachukwu, Esq.

The requisitionists said they had consequently invoked their powers under Article 11(5) to reconvene the meeting for Thursday, October 15, at 2 p.m.
The meeting is scheduled to take place at the Bar Centre, Magistrates’ Court Complex, off Orlu Road, Owerri, Imo State.

The statement added that, should the Bar Centre remain inaccessible, the meeting would be held at the Hon. Justice P. C. Onumajulu Square within the same premises.

The principal agenda is to deliberate on issues arising from the receipt and disbursement of the ₦100 million conference gift received from the Imo State Government, as well as other related matters.

The development comes amid growing concerns within the NBA Owerri Branch over the handling of the funds, which have also prompted the NBA national leadership to constitute a three-member committee to investigate allegations of impropriety surrounding the transaction.

The committee, constituted by NBA President Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, is expected to examine relevant financial records, receive representations from concerned parties and submit its findings and recommendations by October 30, 2026.

The NBA president has clarified that the investigation does not constitute a finding of wrongdoing against any individual and assured that those whose conduct is questioned would be given an opportunity to respond.

Precise Post recalls that the outcome of the extraordinary meeting and the national committee’s investigation is expected to shape further discussions on accountability, financial transparency and due process within the Owerri Branch.
