ABUJA (PRE ISE POST)   –  The Nigerian Senate has called for an urgent overhaul of the country’s security architecture following the killing of several residents in Ankpali-Edikwu, Apa Local Government Area of Benue State.
The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, who raised alarm during plenary over the April 12, 2026 attack, allegedly carried out by suspected armed herdsmen.
Presenting the motion, Moro described the killings as part of a troubling and recurring wave of violence across rural communities in Benue State, marked by loss of lives, destruction of property, and widespread displacement.
Lawmakers expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation, warning that persistent attacks have instilled fear among residents, disrupted farming activities, and threatened food security in the state, often referred to as Nigeria’s “Food Basket.”
The Senate noted that the frequency and brutality of such incidents raise serious concerns about the effectiveness of existing security measures, stressing that safeguarding lives and property remains the core responsibility of government.
While commending security agencies for ongoing efforts, the upper chamber insisted on a more proactive, intelligence-driven, and community-based approach to tackling insecurity nationwide.
Call for Immediate Action
Adopting the motion, the Senate urged the Federal Government to deploy additional military and paramilitary personnel to Apa Local Government Area and other affected parts of Benue State to restore law and order.
It also called on the Chief of Defence Staff, the Inspector General of Police, and other security chiefs to intensify coordinated operations to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure swift justice.
In addition, the Senate mandated its Committees on Defence, Army, Police Affairs, and National Security and Intelligence to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the recurring attacks in Benue South and across the state, with the aim of recommending lasting solutions.
Recognising the humanitarian impact of the violence, lawmakers directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant bodies to provide urgent relief materials and medical assistance to affected communities.
Long-Term Measures and Political Accountability
As part of long-term strategies, the Senate called on the Federal Government to implement policies addressing farmer-herder conflicts, including ranching systems, land use reforms, and community-based conflict resolution mechanisms.
The chamber further directed the immediate establishment of a Police Area Command and a military base in Apa and Agatu Local Government Areas, alongside improved funding for security agencies to enhance intelligence gathering and rapid response.
The Senate also charged Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, to rise to his constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property within the state.
In honour of the victims of the attack, lawmakers observed a minute of silence, reaffirming their commitment to ensuring justice and restoring peace to the affected communities.
Implications of the Senate’s Position
The Senate’s resolutions signal growing pressure on both federal and state authorities to decisively confront insecurity in Nigeria’s agrarian regions. While the proposed measures could strengthen security presence and improve response times, critics argue that without sustained implementation and accountability, such resolutions risk becoming routine legislative reactions.
However, if effectively executed, the combination of immediate security deployment and long-term conflict resolution strategies may help stabilise affected communities and safeguard Nigeria’s agricultural backbone.
